Five Days Later

"How do you feel, Carmine?"

He thought for a moment. This marked his fifth sober day, and the last that Rhonda would be spending in the hospital. "Not as bad as the third day."

She smiled. "Well, we were both out of it. Do you feel the need to drink?"

"Always. But I'm not doin' it now."

"That's good enough for the moment." She lay her cards flat on the table. "Gin."

Carmine squinted at his cards. "Damn, you beat me again."

She smirked. "I can't help it if I'm a champion." She winked. At that moment, Squiggy came through the door with a wheelchair.

"Hello! I checked ya out, and we're ready ta go home."

Rhonda sighed. "Perfect. It would be delicious to feel silk sheets against my bare skin again."

Squiggy smacked his lips, as Carmine rolled his eyes. They both eased her into the wheelchair, and moved her in the direction of the door, and home.

Laverne danced, barefoot, in Leather's guest bedroom. A week of recording had resulted in a pretty tight rock record. Lenny watched her, grinning widely, from the doorway. The last song finished, and she collapsed in a happy lump on the bed.

"I did good?" He asked.

"Yes!" He jumped into her arms, and kissed her forehead. "Ya know, Leather was talkin' about touring last night. After this gets back from the mastering place, it's gonna out out on Polyphone, and, well...in a week, we could be out playin' all over the country!"

She wrapped her arms around his neck. "I only wish some of your stuff made it on the album."

Lenny stiffened; it wasn't that Leather hadn't liked any of his songs, it was that the track listing had already been decided before he showed up in Milwaukee. "It's okay. I know why." He shrugged. "But the good news is that Rhonda's gonna be okay, so we can go anywhere without worryin'."

She kissed his throat. "Sounds like fun, but Len...I ain't a burden on ya, or nothin'? I mean, it ain't gonna be extra for me to come, cause I can work on the crew or something..."

He kissed her nose. "Vernie, I married you cause I want ya to be with me. All the time, every day, every hour." That seemed a little much to Laverne, but she knew he meant it.

"Good. You ain't goin' nowhere without me, then!"

Two weeks later, Leathrette was released to local acclaim. It hit Cashbox's top twenty, and became a sensation in Asia.

A week after that, Laverne and Lenny found themselves on a plane, headed for Japan.

Shirley folded each and every one of Veenie's little school outfits, carefully arranging them in her bureau. The more carefully she folded, the more she was able to focus on the mind-numbing task in front of her. The easier it was for her to pay attention to that than the threats from Walter's threatening letters.

She depended upon her career as a waitress, but it was barely enough to keep her head above water. And now they wanted evidence that her marriage to Carmine wasn't in name only.

She gritted her teeth. Well, there was one way to make the marriage fully legal.

She picked up the phone and dialed Carmine's number.
