Laverne frowned into space while the Leather Tuscadaro Band started passing around the night's dinner.
"Laverne?"
"Huh?" She looked up to see Ralph staring at her expectantly.
"I asked how you're doing."
"Oh!" She sat back.
"What's wrong?"
She sighed. "My friend Rhonda's in the hospital."
"The one I met at the wedding?" She nodded. "Tough break."
"Lenny's just taking it so well. It's not like him, 'cause he an' Squig are so close." She glanced nervously over at Lenny, who was deeply entrenched in a conversation with Leather. "I just don't wanna say anything, 'cause everything's goin' so good right now."
He smiled. "Laverne, I sort of know you. I don't think you can stay quiet for that long."
Laverne smiled nervously. "Me neither. But I'll try."

"Len, why don't ya wanna go help Squig."
Lenny, with a mouthful of toothpaste, gave her an odd look. "I can't leave in the middle 'a this, Vernie."
She squirmed. "I know. Ya just...ya aren't as sad as I thought you'd be..."
"She ain't dead, Vernie." He sighed. "Me an' Squig...we ain't as close as we used to be. All that time apart turned us into different guys." He spat, ran the sink and then crawled into bed with her.
"I miss him, an' I wish I could help more. But I gotta learn to stand up for myself. Just like he does."
Laverne simply held onto Lenny, wondering if it were really possible to just fend for oneself without at least the support of a good friend.
