Carmine leaned against the sideboard of Squiggy and Rhonda's kitchen. They had moved back to Laurel Vista, into Laverne's old apartment, for the time being. "What do you want, Shirley?"

Silence crackled on the other end of the phone. "I'm not going to apologize for calling you on your drinking, Carmine."

"I didn't think you would. I've been sober for awhile now."

"How long?"

"A few weeks."

Silence. "I miss you, Carmine."

"I miss you too, Angelface."

It had been years since he'd called her that. The phone made a solid, thunking noise and he wondered if she'd dropped the phone.

"When are you coming home? They have good treatment centers here, and I'm sure you can continue that way."

He thought for a moment. "Are we going to have a real marriage, Shirley?"

"Yes. Yes, if you stop drinking."

"I have and I will."

"Come home, Carmine."

"On the next flight."

He hung up and, after giving his best to Squiggy and Rhonda, used his last good charge card to buy a ticket to New York.

"Japan?! Honestly, Laverne..."

"Wherever Len goes, I do." Laverne pointed out. "It's weird, but it's kinda fun. Besides, I get to be away from Pop's campaign."

"I can't blame you for that." Frank DeFazio's campaign was making national news for it's bombacity.

"I've gotta get off; It's expensive to call the states from here. I'll call you again when we hit Korea."

"Thank you, Laverne. Night!"

"Night!"

Shirley listened to the dialtone for a few moments before placing the phone in its cradle. Veenie slept in her bedroom, unaware of anything but her own heartbeat and the dreams racing through her head.

A knock sounded at the door, and she was ready for him.

When the door opened, there was no delay in the reunion.
