"I want chocolate."
Lenny emptied his pocket on the pristine metal tray of the ice cream man's truck. The guy looked it over, deemed it worthy, and went about scooping Natashya's cone. When he handed it to her, she smiled very sweetly. "Thank you."
The grass was warm and soft, and Natashya curled up against Lenny's leg there, staring alternately at the children dancing about in the grass and the wound upon her hand.
Laverne sat beside them, talking into her cell phone, arguing with Mike's girlfriend. Sure, the kids had the flu, but it was an emergency. Her daughter was dead. Couldn't they give her a break?
She hung up on a groan. "The kids are sick. I don't think Mike can come."
Lenny shook his head. Mike hadn't ever felt comfortable in their family unit. There was something different about him that neither he or Laverne couldn't quite comprehend. He and his family had been traveling the country in an RV. Just traveling non-stop, without an end.
"How did it happen, Len?"
Damned if he knew. He and Laverne had been pretty good parents. Sure, they had been put in daycare while they tried to get the diner off the ground...and they both had a lot to learn about the business. Teaching them how to run the diner was Frank's last gift to the both of them, God rest his soul.
"I think Natashya wants to play catch."
The little girl finished daintily eating her ice cream. Worse Than Shirley, he mused to himself. Carefully straightening her dress, she stood.
"Okay..." Lenny handed Laverne a tennis ball, and she started to throw it. A problem was evident from the start.
First, Natashya wouldn't run after the ball. If it came to her directly, she would catch it. But she wouldn't run into the dirt or mud coating the grass. Her toss was very dainty and feminine. Tired of such pussyfooting, Laverne finally walloped the ball at her...landing her in the mud.
Natashya straightened herself, stared down at her muddy dress, and burst into tears.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head. "Ruined! It's all ruined! I'll never get a man!"
"A man?!" Lenny blurted. But the little girl ran off in the direction of the car.
Lenny and Laverne traded nervous looks. Something was clearly wrong with that little girl.
