"It burns!"

Lenny chewed his lower lip helplessly as emergency room doctor poked Natashya's wound with the tip of a needle. He rubbed her shoulders. "It's gonna be okay, honey. Look, does it feel better?"

She nodded her head. "Uh-huh."

"What were ya doin' playin' with knives?"

She bit her own lower lip, flicking it beneath her generous front teeth. "You didn't slice the roast beef thin enough. Mommy always said that you have to slice it really thin for sandwiches."

Lenny stared blankly at his granddaughter. Jesus, what did Daisy have her doing? Making gourmet meals for her boyfriends or something?

A parade of bitter images fled through Lenny's mind. Daisy had been his and Laverne's baby; spoiled, pampered, and their only daughter. She had become fascinated at an early age by the fact that her father played backup in a little bar band; when he sold songs to Tina Turner and Joan Jett, she had dreamed of becoming a rock star herself. But New York had been such a bitter disappointment.

It was his fault, in some ways, but in most it was hers. She had ignored him when he told her how hard it was to get a carreer off of the ground, especially in rock music. Her head had been filled with dreams, just as her mother and even his own had been at a young age. Who was he to shatter them?

"Poppa?"

The little eyes watched him. "Hmm?"

"Gamma's here."

Laverne looked haunted as she stood by the triage curtain. Lenny almost ran into her arms, and then found himself wiping her tears away.

"How did she-"

"She said the roast beef was too thin."

"How did she get behind the counter, Len?"

"She ran! I'm fifty-six, ya want me to catch her right away?"

"Ya big dope! You gotta keep an eye on her!" She didn't know what was getting into her. They had survived raising four kids, and they'd all turned out pretty well...except for Daisy.

"Did ya call the others?"

Laverne nodded. "Mike's somewhere in Oshkosh, but I got hold of Lennon and Dylan...they're on their way..." Laverne held out her hands helplessly. "Someone's gonna have to do the food. Who's gonna make all of the sandwiches?" She looked ready to cry again, but denied herself the pleasure of tears. "She wouldn't want me ta cry."

"Daisy never cried. She was Holly Gofuckin'lightly..."

"Len! She was our baby!"

"I loved her." He said. "I loved her so damn much. And it didn't help."

"Gramma?" They both looked down at Natashya Lenny took her tiny, sticky hand, the one without the bandage upon it. "I would like to go to the park now."

Lenny looked to his wife. And she just nodded her head.
