Two Months Ago
"Another Valentine's Day and no date!" Laverne complained, kicking a pink balloon across the floor of the Pizza Bowl.
"Well, it's not as though you didn't have a bunch of suitors, Laverne," Shirley pointed out. "You turned down Norman last week, and Brad, the dishwasher..."
"Yeah," Her eyes fell to the door. Lenny strolled through it, his hand in Donna's. They were even wearing matching red checkered shirts, and blue jeans. Laverne seethed, but Lenny didn't even notice her.
"Hey Shirl!" He chirped, and, without looking at her, "Vernie. Carmine! How's the next fight coming?"
"I told ya, Len, I ain't gonna go back into the ring."
Lenny's expression showed alarm, "But it's only an ex-i..exey.."
"Exhibition." Shirley Said, her hand clamping down on Carmine's arm, "I don't think he's interested, Len."
Carmine's expression told everyone for miles that he was very interested. Shirley was probably the one not interested. But nothing was said.
"Yeah..." He looked at Laverne, directly, meanly, "Ain't got a date, Vernie?"
She shook her head, "Nah."
"Too bad." He tugged Donna by the arm, "C'Mon Donna, betcha I can bowl a perfect game..."
The twosome left the room, as Laverne pouted.
"Oh, come on, Vernie...maybe you'll meet a nice sailor.." Shirley lied as they settled down to a plate of spaghetti.
The night passed miserably; Shirley and Carmine danced the night away, when she wasn't fawning at his feet during his singing engagement. When they took in a couple of frames in the alley, Laverne had no one to partner with, so she watched as Lenny and Donna creamed Shirley and Carmine in ten straight sets.
No one even asked her, her, the best bowler there, to knock down a single pin.
Laverne held herself in check. She wouldn't cry, not in public, not in front of them.
And then Lenny grabbed Donna, pulled her into a slow-dance...the bitterness of her own carelessness washed over her heart in waves.
She couldn't stand being in the same room with them.
Later, she would lie to Shirley that those had been happy tears. She was just so glad for them.

Now, as she neared the outer limits of Milwaukee, Laverne realized that she had very little time left. Fifteen minutes to OshKosh; Ten if she applied a little more gas..
She slammed her foot down on the peddle. Nothing could stop her now.
