Three Months Ago

Laverne gingerly lifted the top of her sandwich, peering suspiciously at the filling between, "Shirl, I told ya I didn't want more egg salad!"

"Laverne," Shirley sighed in exasperation, "The only things we could afford to buy this week were eggs and mayonnaise."

Laverne whined.

"Well, If you don't like it, try to bum something off of your pop at the Pizza Bowl..."

Laverne shook her head, "I ain't takin' more charity from Pop. There ain't nothing lower than than that!"

"Hello!" Came the predictable call. Squiggy seated himself without asking, and, weirdly, without Lenny beside him. Laverne stared at the break room door, expecting him to materialize out of thin air. When he did enter, she let out a sigh of relief...one that seemed to renege instantly on the promise of relief.

For on his arm was a tall, willowy blonde.

With an almost cruel deliberation, they seated themselves at a neighboring table and began conversing. The girl didn't seem disgusted; she didn't seem nervous. She looked relaxed, happy.

Shirley was in the midst of saying something about her brother Michael when Laverne seized her arm, "Who's that girl?"

The brunette peered semi-discreetly over at Lenny's table, "Oh, that's Donna from hops and barley; she's new in town...boy, what did Lenny do to get on her arm?"

"Eh, he dropped his jacket over a puddle fer her in fronta th' pool hall," Squiggy shrugged, "She said she's gonna get me a date wit this friend a hers." He took a snapshot out of his wallet and showed it to Shirley, "Ain't she got a nice beauty mark?"

Shirley's face spasmed with nausea, "Yes, lovely," she pushed her meal and the picture away simultaneously.

"Pool hall?!" Laverne repeated, "I don't like this girl, Shirley. She ain't got enough class fer Len."

Shirley's eyes widened, "Laverne, he's finally moving on with his life! If you keep leading him on you're never going to land a nice policeman."

"Yeah," Laverne said absently, trying to catch 'discreet' glimpses of Lenny and his quarry in her compact's mirror.

Lenny coughed, his eyes falling to the neighboring table, "I think we should talk somewhere else. Maybe I could possibly..." His voice took a lower tone, but Laverne could almost make the words out, "..See ya at Vinny's?"

Donna's voice was smooth but sweet, "Oh sure, I go there every Tuesday anyway." She touched his arm absently, then reached over the table and kissed his lips, "Could you walk me back to H and B?"

Lenny nearly leapt from his chair, following her to the door and holding it open.

With his eyes focused upon Laverne's face, he placed a hand on Donna's behind.

***

"Can't this car go any faster?"

Carmine spared Shirley an annoyed look, "Shirl, I'm doin' over fifty-five. We're gonna get pulled over.."

Shirley's eyes widened in fear as they locked upon the road, "She's making the worst mistake of her life," Shirley blurted out, "Making a fool out of herself for weeks for Lenny Kosnoski..."

"Yeah," Carmine said tartly, his tone of voice telling Shirley to shut up. The little brunette didn't add another word, wondering for a moment what was eating at her boyfriend before staring down the stretch of highway that separated them from Osh Kosh.

She would catch Laverne; catch her and tell her how foolishly she was behaving, how dumb her reaction to Lenny's new love.

It was dumb. She wasn't in denial. She tried to convince herself of that as the miles passed by...
