Letters From The Heart
Part 6

By Missy and Old Time Fan

Lenny's jitters were obvious to Shirley as they waited for Laverne's flight to return from Italy. He clutched a bouquet of daisies and stared resolutely at the gate, waiting with an intensity she'd never seen in anyone.

Much less Carmine.

Shirley couldn't quite believe that Carmine had chosen to go out with Lucile Lockwash. Then again, Shirley herself hadn't been the best of girlfriends.

And soon, she decided, it would be time to break up with him.

Shirley glanced at Squiggy and felt an odd, new tenderness awaken within her. He was a surprisingly sweet boyfriend; though occasionally forgetful and perverted.

He grinned at her and smacked his lips.

Shirley rolled her eyes, thankful that Mr. DeFazio wasn't there. Stuck at the Pizza Bowl for the night, he had asked the three friends to pick up his Muffin and take her back to the restaurant for a welcome home party.

She glanced at Lenny, sensing, though neither he nor Lenny had told her, that Laverne would be getting something extra from Lenny tonight.

What a silly thought! She laughed inwardly, flipping through Look Magazine as an arrival time was announced.

"You know, doncha?"

Shirley's eyes widened, "No..."

"Yeah." He smiled, "I'm kinda in love with your best friend."

Suddenly a flood of tanned, shiny-eyed people exited the gate, and Shirley picked out Laverne instantly.

Her skin had tanned to a golden brown and her green eyes glimmered. She carried her old suitcase, an armful of photo albums and a straw hat.

Shirley rose to her feet, holding out her arms, and Laverne broke into a run...

Meeting the wide-open embrace of Lenny, who had met her halfway.

In silence, the little brunette watched, open-mouthed, as Lenny embraced her friend, scattering her posessions across the floor while holding her aloft. And kissing her. On the mouth.

For a good minute.

She heard Squiggy hoot, and then felt a leather-clad arm wrap itself about her shoulders.

"Give ya any ideas, Shirl?"

She winced, "Not in public, Andrew." She withdrew from his embrace, and his face fell.

A babble of words rushed between Lenny and Laverne, words like "Miss You," and "Love You" and "Baby." And "Strings, SenSen" and "Perfume". He showed her a pile of letters from his pocket and she pulled a fistful from her purse. Then he kissed her again, and she indiscreetly mauled him back.

They separated, but remained locked at the eyes. "Shirl? Can you stay with Squig tonight?"

"What?!"

Squiggy promptly began making kissy-kissy noises, and Shirley groaned, "Laverne, we've got a lot of talking to do..."

Laverne grinned, reverently taking Lenny's hand, "Later."

"..But..."

"We do, Shirl," She grinned, "Save me some breakfast tomorrow. And give Pop these!" She handed Shirley an armful of old family albums. And then, hand-in-hand, she ran off with Lenny Kosnowski.

Shirley groaned, sinking into her seat, "What are we going to tell Mr. DeFazio?" She asked Squiggy.

He shrugged, "Dunno. We gonna go have some pizza?"

She shrugged, "Oh, why not?"

He grinned, "Can I hold your hand?"

He held it out. In this world of madness that had been plunged into, who was to say what was right or wrong?

She took Squiggy's offered palm, and he went in for a kiss.

"No tongues." She announced.

He shrugged, pecking her lips and helping her with the albums.

It wasn't too bad of a way to start things out, he decided.

And he would change her mind about the tongue thing.
