Laverne considered Squiggy for a long time. Squiggy thought she would simply say nothing after a few moments of this treatment, when she abruptly said "Lenny?"
"Kitchen?"
"Yeah."
Lenny trailed his wife to the kitchen, where he instantly stated his position, "we're sayin' yes."
Laverne, frozen, her prepared speech useless. "Are you crazy?" She whispered.
"No, I ain't. Think about it, Vernie..."
She secretly wondered if he was able to think, but said nothing.
"Squig's my best friend, so he ain't gonna cheat us outta nothing. They trained him to run the mess hall when we was in basic training..."
"Yeah?"
"Well, they didn't want him firin' the guns, Vernie..."
"Never mind I asked."
"...So when we ain't there, he'll take care of the place. We can trust him, Vernie, I know we can."
"Len, he don't know nothin' about running a business!"
"Oh yeah? Well, what do you know, sides what your Pop told you."
She shrunk back. "Okay, you got a point there."
"Sounds like you're just turnin' him down cause he's Squiggy."
"It ain't...It...Len, you ain't playin' fair!"
"I ain't never played fair." He pointed out. "And you ain't, neither."
Laverne pouted, sucking at her bottom lip, trying not to cry. "Okay, he's got two weeks. But if he does anything wrong..."
"He'll try again." Lenny said flatly, in a voice that brooked no argument.
Laverne peered over her husband's shoulder. Squiggy was dangling Tommy over his head, suspending and bouncing the recently-fed boy over his body. His new suit was quickly covered in partially-digested bananas.
Squiggy frowned. "Hey, Len; you're kid's broke."

Carmine found Shirley curled up on their couch, reading and re-reading the letter Walter had sent.
"Angelface?" He squinted over her shoulder, reading what lay spread out for him. "Walter?"
"He's going to be in town next week." She blotted her tears away. "And he's bringing Davy."
Carmine held his wife, allowing chest-deep sobs to wrack her body.
