"Laverne can't be that stubborn."
Shirley looked up from her can of Sterno. "How long have you known her?"
Carmine's laugh was humorless. "Lenny's talking to her, right?"
"Yes, but not even he has enough influence to sway her." Shirley turned over the hot dogs, a sigh welling up in her throat. "She's Laverne. She's never liked apologizing, and she won't unless her arm is twisted. Literally."
Carmine laughed to himself. "Yeah, I understand where she's coming from there."
"Carmine, don't take her side. Winter will be coming soon, and I'm NOT going to take someone else's charity to make it through!"
"Yes, ma'am." Carmine said pertly, heading for the door. "I'll pick up more Sterno. You sure this is all we need?"
"It's all that will keep. I'm just as tired of bread as you are!"
Carmine backed out the door. "Easy, easy."
"I'm sorry." She pushed him out the door. "Is that the mail?" Carmine had almost tripped over it on the way out.
He bent and quickly retrieved the mail. "If it's a bill, burn it." He said humorously.
She shook her head, separating the mail as he headed downstairs. To her shock, there was something more than a bill in the pile.
"Dear Shirley,
I know it's been awhile since I've written you..."
Her tears blurred Walter's handwriting into a mess.

"Vernie, how're we gonna eat?"
Laverne's eyes were fixed on Tommy. "At least he gets a warm meal." She muttered, as if in a trance.
Lenny snapped his fingers. "Vernie, snap out of it!
"I'm sorry." Laverne cradled Tommy closely to her belly. "I can't help it, Len. It's real scary."
"Fightin' with Edna?"
"Yeah. I wish I didn't yell at her, but I ain't givin' the Pizza Bowl back!"
"You been by there in awhile?"
She shook her head.
"It's doin' okay; it's getting' dirty, and no one's washin' the windows." Lenny shrugged. "You'd be real good with it, Vernie."
"That's why I don't want it to leave the family."
"You sure?" He teased. "Yer family tree's got a lot of shady people hangin' off the branches."
"HELLO!"
Squiggy flopped down beside Laverne, not even noticing she was nursing. "Len, friend of my friend, Laverne; stealer of my best friend..."
"Squig, say what ya want, then leave."
"That ain't no way to speak to a business partner."
Laverne's eyes cut through Lenny. "What did ya tell him?"
"Nothin, I swear!"
"What do you mean 'business partner', Squig?"
"I Mean, I got the cash, and you got the knowhow." He smiled. "Waddya say? Partners?"
