"Vernie, it ain't nobody's fault that Robert di-."
"I should've kept him! I shoulda listened to Pop and let him arrange a marriage fer me!"
"But then you never woulda gotten with me!"
She sent him a semi-pathetic look that reflected her complete misery.
"Vernie..." he began, but paused, "what kinda life would Robert have had, if you kept him? Carmine woulda claimed him, sure, but even then, you wouldn'ta had any money. You woulda starved. You guys couldn'ta made it, and Carmine wouldn't have gotten to where he is today. And you woulnt'a gotten yer nifty job or nothin'."
Laverne sniffled, "Why do you hafta make sense like this, Len?" her tone had changed, calmed.
He hugged her, "come inside."

The caseworker wore a sympathetic expression. "I'm sorry that you had to discover the truth this way."
"Do you have any other information? Like where his grave is?"
He handed her a file, "we do have this bit of information."
Laverne opened it and pulled out a small form, "Anne and John Devon?" she read, reading the address below.
The caseworker smiled, "Robert's adoptive parents."
