Laverne strolled cautiously along.
New York had changed, undeniably so, in the years since her last trip. The streets were crowded in litter and layered with dirt. The change was even noticeable to Lenny; his eyes darted back and forth across the street, keeping watch for threatening types.
"Where's the agency?" Lenny asked.
"On 54th street." She said, "Two blocks away."
Lenny groaned softly, tucking his hand in hers, "You got an appointment?"
"Yeah, with a Mr. Fenster." She sighed, "They said they could've Fed-Xed the stuff to us, but I really wanna see if I can look him up.."
Lenny nodded, not really paying attention; scanning the buildings for numbers. At last, they found the building.
Set back against a high rise, the dark-bricked building didn't immediately stand out against the cityscape. Lenny pulled her toward it with a firm tug.
The waiting room was deserted; The secretary buzzed them into Mr. Fenster's office swiftly.
The porcine man shook their hands swiftly; his smile seemed insincere, but touched with a bland kindness.
"We have your files here, Mrs.."
"Kosnowski." She finished, on a thin smile.
"Would the biological father like a copy?"
She shrugged. Carmine was on the USO Tour, far away from the states. "I suppose we could keep a copy of the file for him..."
He nodded, handing her a copy, "Some of the information is classified. You didn't keep the adoption sealed..."
She nodded, "I wanted the kid to be able to find me.." Her eyes scaled the pages.
His name was Robert..he had excellent health...Had attended Mount Mary.
She dropped the file and clasped a hand over her mouth in horrified shock.
"What" Lenny asked, as tears came to her eyes, "Honey, what is it?"
He picked up the file, and read:
"Robert...Date of death, 10/02/92..."
