"You ain't goin' anywhere, Laverne!" Carmine repeated. Her foot told him differently. He was on her heels at every moment, right up until she reached Shirley's door.
She slammed her palm against the buzzer. The bleary voice of the brunette cut through Carmine.
"Whaddya want?"
Shirley hadn't done too well since she and Carmine had split. She had begun drinking. Guilt touched Laverne.
"It's Vernie, Shirl."
"Vernie? My Vernie? No; she's in California..."
"I'm right here!"
"No! Go'Way!"
"Ya heard her!"
"Carmine?"
Carmine blanched. "Erh.." At that point, a bus pulled up before the crumbling, red-bricked building.
The girl who jumped out of the bus was too familiar.
"Leah?!"
"Ma?"
"Where's your father?"
As if by magic, Lenny came panting up the street a moment later. He leaned against Carmine's infirm support, nearly falling to the ground when his friend proved as invertebrate as always.
The door buzzed open.
"C'Mon up!"
