"Don't touch that!"

Laverne rolled her eyes as she tried to pick up BooBoo Cat's litter box. "Why not?"

"Cause, I read in a magazine this week that moms ain't supposed ta touch litter boxes. Stuff in the litter hurts the baby."

Laverne gave a disgusted sigh and flopped back onto her bed. Scratch that; the bed wasn't even hers. It belonged to the Chelsea Hotel. Not even being in New York at the infamous Chelsea was enough to ease Laverne's antsy boredom.

Lenny picked up on her ennui. "Aww, don't get mad, Vernie." He finished emptying the litter box and set it down, so that the black Persian could climb back into the box. "Soon, the baby'll be out."

"And then I can get licensed to be a security guard."

Panic filled Lenny's eyes. "Huh?"

Laverne hadn't realized that she had spoken that wish aloud. "Oh...Uh, I was just thinkin' out loud."

He smiled. "Yeah, I know; New York's makin' me crazy. One more show, then we can figure out where we wanna be."

Laverne knew exactly where she wanted to be. Telling Lenny would panic him, so she just smiled, surrendering without words.

"Yes, doctor? Oh...oh. I see." Shirley frowned, hanging up the telephone. The third negative test in four weeks.

She slumped onto a kitchen chair, frowning at the fruit basket. The only thing making the past few months palatable had been Laverne's presence in the city. They had spent every available free moment together, taking lunch, going to museums, going to shows.

It didn't stop the aching hollow in her heart, the one Moth's departure had formed. She heard weekly from Rhonda, who crowed at Moth's growth, and of Squiggy's surprising willingness to stay at home with her while Rhonda worked in what were generally b-list and drive-in movies.

Determination crept through Shirley's heart. She was a born leader, after all. She would get what she wanted.

She continued thawing her pork chops. She would be alone again with Carmine tonight.

"Councilman DeFazio, employment in your sector is up, zoning restrictions are down...and you're rather popular socially."

"Eh, well, I love the people, an' I care about 'em deeply."

"Strong words for a future governor."

Frank smiled brightly. The governor's race was in the bag. Sure, he was socially conservative, even in increasingly liberal times, but he was outrageously popular with his constituents. There wasn't any doubt that the former restraunt owner would soon be living his American Dream. It was almost ordained.

Edna was less than thrilled by the idea of being a governor's wife, but hey, she'd come around. He already had the perfect family in his pregnant daughter, even if her husband was an idiot.

After all, who would dare to shatter such a perfectly-sculpted bubble?
