Laverne awoke to the warm, comforting embrace of Lenny's arms. A smile crossed her lips as she burrowed against his embrace; he felt good, right, comfortable.

But it was more than that.

Their encounter hadn't been life changing. It hadn't been especially erotic. But it had been feeding, nurturing, and supercharging. He made her feel so alive...

Alive; she had forgotten about that.

Snuggling against his side, she listened to his heartbeat. So this was what love felt like.

Love; her blood froze.

Neither of them had mentioned love last night. She had wanted his assurance, his strength. She knew that love must come of what they did together, but knew he had made love to her out of kindness. He had no clue how he felt about her.

The phone beside her bed rang, and she reached across him to get it.

"H'lo? Oh...hi officer....What?! Are you sure? But how can they say that?!" She blanched. "Okay...I'll be ready. Bye." She allowed the phone to land in its receiver.

Only then did Lenny stir. "Who was that?"

"The DA. They're fighting the charges." She shuddered. "We're going to trial."
