"You're upset, Shirl."
Shirley smashed an aluminum pan against their rangetop. "I'm not upset Carmine."
"Yes you are, Mama. That's your slamming pan."
Shirley grunted. "Veenie, honey, can you do your homework in the bedroom? Carmine and I need to talk."
"Why do I have to miss the good stuff?"
"Your Aunt Laverne had the same problem."
Veenie shuffled off into a bedroom to finish her additions, and Shirley turned to Carmine.
"I don't know what your problem is, but my problem is that we sent a sweet, lovely baby back to California an hour ago with those...wolves!"
"How long have we been friends with Rhonda and Squiggy?"
"You know that answer."
"But I'm asking you."
"For a long, long time, in Squiggy's case." She uttered.
"Long enough to trust them with a baby, right?"
"Yes..."
"Then why are you so upset?"
Shirley let out a deep, long sigh. "At this age, I always pictured myself having a bunch of kids, a beautiful house, and a stable marriage."
"And now?"
"I have an apartment, a tentative job and one child from a man I tolerate."
Carmine smiled. "Yeah, I pictured more too...but, you know...now that my salary's better, we could get a place in Jersey..."
"You don't mean it." Her eyes widened.
"Yeah. We could afford to get a little house."
"But it's not everything I want."
"Shirl, I can't give it to you if we don't talk about it."
"Are you ready?"
"Go on." He crossed his arms.
"A baby, Carmine." She smiled. "I want us to have a baby."
He smiled. "Ya know what?"
"What?"
"Let's do it."
***
"He just said 'let's do it'?"
Shirley laughed at Laverne's incredulous tone. "Yes. I think he realizes that we're safe now; he has a real, steady job, if the show opens strongly."
"And you?"
"Searching for my muse, Laverne."
"What's that mean?"
"Never mind. You said you called me for a reason?"
"I need advice, Shirl."
"Okay."
"What if you were gonna have a baby. But you wasn't sure that was what ya wanted?"
"That's a strange question, Laverne."
"Yeah, well, I didn't know what you was going on when I came to ask ya."
"I think you'd be a wonderful mom, Laverne."
"How do ya know? Len told me that too, but how can anyone know?"
"Because you're a great woman. Lenny will take care of you, and he loves you. He'd worship any children you'd happen to have."
"You just think every girl should be a mamma."
"No, I think you should be a mamma because the world needs more children. You'll both do well, I promise you."
"You know, don't you?"
"I have an instinct, Laverne. Good night."
"Good night."
Laverne stared at the phone as the plane roared through the sky. She wasn't entirely sure, but she understood how much Lenny loved her.
The divide that had formed between them since the Venetian argument began to dissolve. She crossed the aisle and lay her head against his shoulder.
"You okay?"
"I'm pregnant."
He smiled. "Yeah. I love ya. I'll take care of ya."
"I know."
"And you promise not to do what ya did in Italy?"
He fell asleep before she could agree. Good thing that a promise so made wasn't a promise she intended to keep.
