"Hold still, Len."

He scowled at Laverne's calm, gentle words. Still?! He'd been perfectly still for almost two weeks now, and back then he wasn't even sure if he'd live. He waited patiently, rolling his eyes at her benevolent smile until she deemed that the thermometer had sat for a long enough period in his mouth.

She hadn't been so calm, he thought to himself with a sense of grim satisfaction, when she thought he was going to die. Hysterical would have been a better term. Finally, she withdrew the thermometer from his mouth and squinted down at the little, red line of mercury.

"96 degrees," She smiled, "Yer back to normal, Len."

"I coulda told you that!" He pouted, and tried to toss off his covers.

"Uh-uh, she pushed him backward and, to his dismay, he was still as weak as a baby, "The doctor said you gotta stay in bed for another week."

"But Laverne..." He whined.

"Len, that fever was real bad. The doc said he never saw somone react like that to the flu."

"Aww..."

"No, Len, you coulda died. Now, Shirl's downstairs makin' ya soup; I'm gonna go get ya a bowl. If ya need somethin', yell down the dumbwaiter, OK?"

He groaned, "But I don't got nothin' ta do!" He whined.

She sighed, looking around the apartment. She finally located something, grabbing it and placing it on his stomach, "Here ya go; you can play with Jeffery."

He stared at the stuffed iguana, which settled upon his tummy, "Thanks, Laverne."

"Yeah, I knew you missed him." She smiled. Their eyes locked briefly, but she turned away, leaving the apartment.

Lenny sighed to himself; she was crazy for him when the Grim Reaper was ready to cut his head off, and now that he was well they were back to square one.

"Boy, Jeffery, she sure don't know how to treat a guy..." He remarked, stroking the leathery back of his confidant. He didn't quite notice the change in texture of the lizard's skin, or the flickering of the once-dead creature's tongue as his reanimation took place.

But it was impossible to ignore Jeffery when he began creeping up Lenny's torso, resting his head upon his owner's collarbone.
