"Shirl, you sure you don't want some lunch?"

"No, Laverne," Shirley's gaze was absent, filled with detachment, "I'm fine."

Laverne turned back to her sandwich, topping it with a slice of bread and carrying it to the sofa. She was just about ready to sink her teeth into her morsel when a loud banging sounded from the door.

"Shirl, can you..." Shirley, however, stared out into the distance, her expression completely detached, "never mind.." Laverne jumped to her feet, rushing off to the door.

"Hel-Lenny?" she leapt back at the anxious expression upon Lenny's face.

"Vernie, I gotta talk..." he caught sight of Shirley; her pale face and distant expression made him wary. The sight of that scarf around her neck was the last straw, "someplace else." He grabbed Laverne by the wrist and pulled her out of the room.

Laverne seized her wrist back from Lenny, "no."

"Huh?"

"No, Len, I ain't gonna go out with you again!"

Lenny shook his head, "Vernie, we got more important problems on our hands..."

"Like what?"

"I don't know how ta tell you..."

"Just say it, Len!"

"Uh...Carmine's a vampire."

Laverne stared at him for a good second before bursting into laughter.

"La-verne!" he cried.

"Lenny!! You just said Carmine's a vampire and I'm not supposed ta laugh?!"

"Well, it ain't exactly funny news!"

"Len, you had to have missed something; did he say he was going to see a vampire movie? Go to audition for a Vampire play?" Lenny shook his head resolutely to each of her suggestions, "well, what did you see?!"

"Carmine burnin' up Lucile Lockwash's body in the furnace."

Laverne stared at Lenny in shock, "Len, you're scarin' me..."

"An' then he swept it out, so there'd be nothing left, but I was hidin' from Squig in the dryer and I saw everything!"

"Lenny!" she gasped, "I dunno what's makin' you say all of these things about Carmine, but they ain't true; they can't be!"

"But they are, Vernie!"

"No!" she said, backing against the door, "you gotta just be tired, that's it..." she entered the apartment and was stunned to find it empty. "Shirl?" she called, but decided in the silence that she had just gone to bed early.

"Laverne!" he called, but she had disappeared into the room. He slammed his fist against the door; damnit, if she couldn't protect herself, then he would be the one to keep her safe!

"We can't keep doing this, Carmine." Shirley murmured weakly.

He released her, wiping his mouth, "Don't worry, Shirl; I know what I'm doin'. As long as I don't take all of your blood..."

"How do you know?" she asked, placing a palm over her bleeding wounds.

"Well, now I have experience..."

Shirley gasped; he sounded almost proud of it, "oh, I don't want to know." She groaned, "I'm dizzy, and I feel all light-headed."

"From the blood loss. If you want, you can drink from me."

She recoiled, "drink blood?! No!"

"Shirl, if I keep doing this, you ain't gonna have much of a choice."

She glared at him, "that's my point! I don't want to be a vampire!" she stalked back down the alley and into the apartment building.

Carmine laughed to himself. Soon, her cravings would be so strong that she wouldn't be able to resist him. "You're mine, Shirley Feeney." He said to himself.

Squiggy sipped a beer in his apartment. He wondered for a moment if his favorite rat, Bernie, was about.

Suddenly, a thrill of worry streaked through him. He tried to ignore it, but there it was again.

Some force beyond himself caused him to shatter his bottle of beer, making a crude weapon.

"I sense evil."
