Laverne carefully lit each candle upon her dining room table. Stepping back from the tableau, she smiled with satisfaction at the neat pink-and-white table she had set for the night.
Shirley would be proud at her for setting such a nice table; Lord knew, she had studied enough of those bridal books with Shirley to know how to set one.
She paused, carefully straightening her very formal pink skirt and blouse. Brunch sat, piping hot, upon her inlet. It was Sunday, the final Sunday before she and Lenny would be forced to fly back to New York so that Lenny could take his finals. When the door burst open and he stood at the other end of it she rushed into his arms.
"Hey, I brought some Bosco.." His sentence was cut abruptly by Laverne's lips locking upon his own. When she released him, panting for air, he blurted, "Wow!!"
She grinned, "I needed that," She wiped her lower lip and pulled him into the kitchen.
"Aww, this smells real good!" He tried to grab a fingerful of stuffing from a dish, but she smacked his wrist.
"Len!! No one wants ta eat picked-ova food!" She snapped. Then she sighed at his wounded expression, "Aww, I'm real sorry, Len; I'm just real nervous, with my Pop findin' out today."
He hugged her gently, "I know, Vernie; that's why I invited my pop, too!"
Laverne stiffened in Lenny's arm, filling with fear. Ollie Kosnonski was a hard-working man, but his years had toughened him; he worshipped Lenny and Mary, his daughter. No one had ever been good enough for Lenny.
Especially little Vernie DeFazio, who had thrown out his son's love far too many times.
"He hates me!" She cried out.
"Nah!!" Lenny insisted, "He don't hate nobody!", The doorbell rang...horribly, "I'm sure he ain't gonna say somethin' mean."
Through the door bust Frank...with two security guards, who swept Laverne's apartment for the umpteenth time. At last, they took comfortable outposts near the edge of the table, forcing Laverne to feed them something.
At that moment, Laverne wished she had invited Shirley to work as a buffer, but she was in the process of selling her home overseas "before Walter could lay his grimy mitts on it'. Anxiety prevented Laverne from doing anything more than smile at Frank's latest Councilman-related foible. Edna, kindly, brought Lenny into the conversation with a series of questions about his lessons; all of which Frank responded to with stony silence.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang once more; Laverne rushed to the door and opened it.
Ollie Kosnoski was easily recognizable; he was the spitting image of his son, only with slightly more regal bearing. Ollie was a Count and acted like it, even if he had no money.
He nodded to Laverne, then rushed to his son's embrace.
"Len! You're finally gaining weight!"
Lenny smiled, "Yeah, pop, I'm real happy nowadays." His eyes locked with Laverne.
But by that point Ollie had seen Frank DeFazio. And Frank, had definitely seen Ollie.
Their reactions were succinct and symmetrical.
"YOU!"
