Even to Laverne's untrained eye it was clear that purchasing a wedding gown was unlike buying any other dress she would ever own, after a few initial questions Laverne was shown to a spacious dressing room and a saleswoman took her measurements

"Congratulations on your wedding Miss Defazio and may I say, you're an almost perfect size 12"

Standing in just her slip and stockings Laverne could only nod to the elegant sale clerk then she muttered to Shirley

"Shirl... what am I doin' here?"

Shirley patted her arm and said "Relax, remember Lenny? keep your eye on the ball "

Laverne took a deep breath and smiled. a moment later a clerk entered the dressing room with the first gown Laverne had chosen and began to help her into the dress. Laverne did not dare look into the mirror until all the adjustments and pinnings were completed

"Now let's look in the mirror and see how becoming this gown is on you..." the saleswoman said Turning, Laverne
found herself looking in the mirror at a woman she had only dreamed of

"Shirl...I'm really a bride... I'm gettin' married!" she squealed

The weeks flew past as preparations were completed and Laverne found herself in the bride's dressing room at St Michael's church as Edna finished doing her hair and make-up and Shirley opened the door

"Thirty minutes Laverne" she said and gave her best friend a reassuring hug

" Shirl... did I ever say thank you , for all the times you were there for me and knew just what to say, and sometimes you didn't have to say anything at all and you could always make me laugh no matter what.. That's what a real best friend is and nobody could do it better than you"

trying not to cry Shirley said " Vernie, you've always been there for me and me for you, You're the sister I always wanted.."

Edna stood up and whispered "Laverne, it's time to get dressed"

Both women helped Laverne into the magnificent cream colored satin and lace gown, The Queen Anne neckline made Laverne appear tall and regal and the tiara holding her veil in place sparkled . Laverne wore her gold confirmation cross and the pearl earrings were a wedding gift from Edna.

"Edna, I couldn't have gotten thru all this without you"

Laverne said A knock sounded at the door "Laverne, ya almost ready ?" Laverne opened the door and her father stood there wearing a dark grey morning suit

" oh Pop... " and her father held out his arm

"Laverne, your mother would be so proud of you.. I'm proud of you too. you are the joy of my life... now let's show 'em how a Defazio does it" Edna handed Laverne her bridal bouquet of lilies of the valley.

Shirley and Edna waited for their cue As the opening notes of the Bridal March began, the doors to the sanctuary opened. The church was nearly full as Laverne grasped her father's arm and slowly stepped forward.. Standing beside the altar was Lenny, looking very proud and handsome in his tuxedo, waiting for her, for now and for always.
It took her a while but she finally got it right
