Lenny was stretched out on a blanket under a tree, wondering what he had done to deserve to be so happy. It was more than happiness, he felt absolutely content. With Laverne's head resting on his shoulder they watched the swans glide across the lake, looking up they could see a squirrel jump from branch to branch.
Laverne turned and lightly kissed Lenny's neck. "Aww Lenny.. I feel like I'm starting out on a great adventure, a whole new beginning."
Lenny hugged her closer. "Then it's yes? You will marry me?"
Laverne nodded, too happy to speak .
Lenny whispered in her ear, "I want to ask your father's permission."
Tears welled up in Laverne's blue eyes. "What a swell guy to do something that sweet," she thought to her self, knowing now that Lenny really was the one she had been waiting for all this time.
They gathered up their picnic and headed back to the car. Laverne wasn't the only one who felt like a whole new world was dawning. Lenny found his thoughts filled with Laverne and their future together. As they parked in front of their apartment building, Lenny kissed her on the lips.
"I'll call your Dad tonight and then go talk to him," he said.
"Call me as soon as you can, Lenny." Laverne said as she walked down the stairs to the
basement apartment she shared with Shirley.
"Mr. Defazio, I was wondering if you and your wife would be home this evening, there's something I want to ask you about," Lenny said into the phone.
Frank lets Lenny know that he and his wife will be home around 7 that evening. Lenny knocks on the door at 7:30 wearing his best plaid sports coat, his hair is neatly combed and even his fingernails are scrubbed and free of dirt. Edna opens the door and offers Lenny a soda. Frank DeFazio walks into the living room and Lenny seems nervous and tense as he begins to speak.
"Uh, Mr. Defazio, you know I have known Laverne since we were both kids and we have been dating each other for these past six months and Laverne is a very special girl...uh what I'm trying to say is, sometimes the person you were meant to be with was right there beside you all the time."
Edna enters the room and sizes up the situation at once as Frank turns pale and sits heavily on the sofa.
"Mr. DeFazio, I love Laverne with all my heart and I want to spend the rest of my life making her happy."
Edna clutches Frank's hand, as Frank says softly, "you asking for my permission to marry my little girl?"
"Yes sir, I am."
Frank begins to weep silently. "She's my whole life, everything I did, I did for Laverne."
Frank gets himself under control and he leaves the room, he comes back a few minutes later and asks Lenny to sit down. Frank opens his hand, "this is the ring I gave to Laverne's mother 33 years ago, I would be proud to have Laverne wear it as your wife." Edna hugs Frank and then Lenny, by now all three are teary eyed.
Lenny asks to use their phone, he dials Laverne's number and she picks it up on the first ring. "Sweetheart, I'm at your dad's house, can you come over?"
Within minutes, Laverne is at her Pop's apartment, she opens the door and sees Lenny sitting alone on the sofa the only light is from three candles on the table.
"Lenny?"
Lenny motions for Laverne to sit next to him on the sofa, as she does Lenny slides down so he is on one knee and holding Laverne's hands.
"Laverne, I love you with all my heart, will you accept this ring and do me the honor of being my wife?"
"Yes...yes Lenny I will, I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
Lenny slips the engagement ring on her finger
"Oh it fits, it fits," she says in wonderment. From behind her Laverne hears her father say "it was your mother's."
Laverne rushes into her father's arms, "oh Pop.. it's beautiful."
(later that evening)
Laverne rushes back to her apartment and bolts through the door.
"SHIRL! Shirl! I gotta talk to ya!"
Shirley comes out of the bathroom wearing a fuzzy robe, curlers in her hair. "Laverne, why are you yelling like a wild Indian? What could be that important?"
Laverne shyly holds out her left hand to display the ring. "Shirl.. I'm gettin' married.. me & Lenny."
Shirley's jaw drops and she stutters, "y-you're getting m-married? Oh my God!" Shirley stares at her best friend in shock. "Oh my God, your serious."
Shirley throws her arms
around Laverne in a bear hug and screams. "Oh Laverne!"
Then another thought dawned on her and she dropped onto the sofa. "What am I gonna do without you? Your not just my best friend, you're the sister I never had and always wanted!"
Shirley begins to weep and Laverne hugs her and pats her on the back. "It's gonna be ok, Shirl, really it will."
Shirley gives Laverne a brave little smile through her tears, "I know it will be Laverne ..and Laverne.. I am happy for you.. you and Lenny.. Mrs Lenny Kosnowski."
Laverne starts to giggle. "Oh Shirl, it's hard to explain but Lenny is the right guy for me.. to him, I'm not a bimbo, to him I'm an equal. My thoughts and feelings and opinions matter to him, and he doesn't just treat me like a woman, he treats me like a lady."
Shirley could see all the romantic hopes and dreams finally fulfilled, shining in Laverne's eyes and the bond between the two best friends is closer than ever as they begin to plan Laverne's wedding.
