He kissed her.

He didn’t even say hello. She knew he had come to make out, but when he pressed his lips against hers her stomach was spinning faster than the clothes in the drier. It happened every single time. Three seconds later (or what it seemed like an eternity) the ended the kiss. Laverne grabbed his hand and pulled him to the couch. Lenny chuckled, amused by her; she walked in quick steps and giddy as a school girl. When he sat she sat one his lap and started nibbling on his neck.

“Hey I broughtcha something,” he told her producing from his Lone Wolf jacket’s pocket a pack of Wrigley’s spearmint gum.

“You brought me gum? Aw!” Laverne was so embarrassed she started checking her breath.

“No, no! Your breath’s fine! I just thought you needed more ‘cause when we kiss your chewing gum always ends up with it in my mouth.”

Laverne laughed thinking he was so cute. His little beady blue eyes, his blonde eyebrows, eyelashes… Even the delicate blonde hair in his arms made her crazy. He wasn’t the smartest guy she knew, but certainly he was the best looking. She had gone out with countless guys, but none of them compared to Lenny. Even if his hair was all greased up, she like running her fingers through it. There was no towel around, but Shirley probably wouldn’t notice the grease stains on their “Hi Sailor” pillow.

But more than his blue eyes and soft lips, she liked him. Not only because he was the sweetest guy she had ever known, or that she knew he would do anything for her, but the fact that he truly cared about her. Most guys cared only for a good time, but Lenny was always there to tell her that maybe she had had one beer to many or that she shouldn’t go out without her woolen cap in the winter otherwise her ears would “fall off”.

“Oh Len I love you!”

“Wow I should’ve given you the gum sooner!”

“No, you big dope,” she said, lovingly. “I don’t love you because of the gum. I love you because of everything. Because of you.”

As they kissed she began thinking about their relationship. Sure, Lenny was a complete gentleman, but it seemed that was beginning to be a problem. In fact, that was the problem. He was a complete gentleman. When they kissed he would put his hands inside his pocket; he wouldn’t touch her. Normally she would just sit there and let the man make all the moves, but with Lenny it was different.

And she was sick of it.

She grabbed his hands and tried to pull them out, but there they were, inside the pockets. The more she pulled the more they stayed inside. Laverne was becoming frustrated but didn’t want to say anything that would upset Lenny. So she it him in the stomach.

Quickly his hands flew out of the pockets, but before he could place them on the area that was in pain, Laverne quickly took hold of them and placed them around her waist.

She gave him a victory smile, but he couldn’t bring himself to even a smirk. He was nervous.

“What’s the matter with you? All nervous, sweating--- You don’t even want to put your arms around me.”

“No, wait! It’s not that I don’t want to but it’s just that I---“

“What Len? Tell me what is it!”

“I know that when I start I’m not gonna be able to stop---”

“Oh?” Laverne, let us say, was genuinely interested.

“I know that if I put my arms around you--- well I’m gonna put my arms all around you!”

“Well what are you waiting for?”

“What? Well I thought---“

“What are you blabbin’ about? I hope you really meant what you just said!” Laverne grabbed his collar and pulled him toward her. Soon, they were resting horizontally on the couch and he pinned her down. And with that he put his hands on her thighs, lifting her skirt just a bit. That was another thing she like about him; he had big hands.

“Okay so you weren’t joking.”

He gave her quick kisses, sweet kisses. She gave him a little tongue. The softness of his lips, the warmth of his body against hers, and the speed they were gaining made her lose her breath; she didn’t know how strongly she was pulling his hair. He didn’t care either. They both smiled mischievously; they knew what was up for them that night. They had been talking about it for weeks and what it seemed like an innocent make-out session was beginning to turn out to be more. His hands started going up, up---

“Hey Laverne!” cried a squeaky voice that came from her room. The moment had been spoiled.

“What is it, Shirl?” said Laverne fixing her skirt back to it’s normal position since it had ridden considerably above her knees.

“I can find my right shoe!”

“Is it beside your wrong shoe?”

“Not funny Laverne!” she cried coming out of the room. Shirley gave one look at the couple, who were still lying on the couch, and were looking at her angrily. She realized that maybe, just maybe, she had interrupted them.

“Yep, you interrupted us, Shirl.”

“Yeah,” said Lenny trying to catch his breath.

“Oh did I?” she asked with caution. She smiled meekly and walked backwards once again to her room. She forced a carefree laughter and, as if nothing had happened, she disappeared.

“What a swell time to lose a shoe.”

“You tell me!” he said, frustrated. She noticed how much his face had flushed; one would think he had just finished running a marathon.

Laverne and Lenny started laughing. Just a couple of minutes before, he had given her some chewing gum as if they were in the third grade. And now they were one on top of the other like crazed teenagers with their hair and clothes all messed up. Lost in a moment of passion they had almost vo-deo-doed!

Almost vo-deo-doed… with Shirley in the apartment.

“My place now,” said Lenny firmly, hopping away from Laverne and yanking her from the couch. “Squiggy’s out for the night.” Before Laverne could take one step, Lenny kissed her and put her over his shoulder.

“Len what’s the rush?”

“Do you remember that song we used to sing as kids?”

“Which one? Uh… ‘Pop! Goes the Weasel’?”

“That’s the one.”

“Huh? Oh... OH!”

He hurried toward the door, carrying Laverne effortlessly and the only thing Laverne could say before they were out was:

“YIPEEE!”
