Laverne and Lenny were just arriving from a Milwaukee Braves game. They had spent that last week almost entirely with one another. They went bowling, dancing and even to the Fofo, the Wonder Dog movie marathon. Every time they felt more and more comfortable with each other, and they both sensed it.
Lenny was pushing down his sixth and last hot dog.
"Boy! What a game, huh, Laverne?" he said, as he sat down on the couch.
"What are you so happy about? We lost ten to one, Len. That ain't nothing to be smiling about," she said, depressed, sitting down beside him.
"Want some hot dog?" he asked, showing her a tiny little piece of ketchup-y bread. Laverne was disgusted, but thought it was a nice gesture anyway.
She took the little piece from his fingers and ate it. He looked at her and started snickering.
"What?" she asked, a little irritated.
"You got a little ketchup on your lip."
She wiped it off with her hand.
"Nope, still got some."
"Well, clean it, Len!" she whined.
He leaned over to her as to give her a kiss. As she saw him coming, she pushed him away.
"What do you think your doin', Len?" asked Laverne. She really wasn't in the mood for his little games. And she was especially angry that afternoon since she had bet ten bucks to Carmine that the Braves would win.
"I'm trying to lick away the ketchup."
Laverne was now grossed out.
"Ew! Len, why'd you have to go and tell me that for?"
She wiped her face again and said: "I thought you were trying to give me a kiss."
"Ok, that too."
They both looked at each other for a second, and then they smiled and looked away feeling shy.
They looked at each other for the second time, and sat a little closer. They giggled, like children at the school yard under a tree. He put his arm around her, and said in a low voice, bashfuly.
"Come on, Laverne..."
"Len..." she said, smiling, embarrassed of what he was doing. He was going to kiss her, and for the first time, they both really wanted to.
For the first time, it would be different.
They both leaned toward one another until their lips met. A little, innocent kiss suddenly turned into something more intense. Then the door was opened.
Shirley and Carmine had just arrived from the grocery store. Carmine reluctantly carried Shirley's groceries in a paper bag, and Shirley walked in front of him, as to avoid getting too close to him. They both walked to the counter, and Carmine put down the groceries.
They had obviously been fighting all the way home, and now they were too exhausted to talk. They didn't say a word to one another, and they didn't even see Laverne and Lenny kissing. They just sneered silently every time their eyes met.
When Shirley turned and finally saw Laverne and Lenny, she opened her mouth and screamed.
Lenny and Laverne were so surprised by the scream that they both jumped off the couch.
"We'll save you, Shirl!" cried Lenny as he and Laverne ran out the door.
Carmine laughed and Shirley gave him a look that silenced him instantly. She then waited for Laverne and Lenny to return. They both entered, still running.
"They kidnapped her, Laverne!" cried Lenny, as he ran into the girl's bedroom.
"You go get the bat! I'll call the police!" said Laverne, picking up the phone. "Shirl, what's the police department's number?"
Laverne froze and felt stupid seeing Shirley looking at her with her arms crossed, tapping her foot.
"If you ain't been kidnapped, then what were you screaming for?"
"What were you doing making out with Lenny in our couch?" she said pointing at the place were smut had happened.
"Well... uh... Shirl, I think you better sit down for this one."
"Uh oh," said Carmine, amused.
"You are not helping, Carmine," said Shirley as she sat down, not seeing when he stuck his tongue out at her. "Now, answer my question, Laverne."
"Me and Len... Well you see... He and I have been going out for some time and... You see, today we sort of agreed... It's like when two doves find themselves sitting on a telephone pole and..."
"Laverne you are not making any sense! Will you just spill it!" yelled Carmine.
"Carmine, dear, why don't you be a darling and go home? And thank you for carrying my groceries," said Shirley, between her teeth, trying hard not to get mad.
"Fine, I'll go home. I never get to stay and listen to the good stuff. Always throwing me out..." he said under his breath as he walked out the door. Now Laverne and Shirley were alone.
"Ok, spill it!" yelled Shirley, just as Carmine had yelled before.
"Lenny and I are in love."
Shirley froze in her grin, as if somebody had pushed her shut-down button.
"Shirl?" said Laverne, snapping her fingers at her face. "Shirl, are you there?"
Laverne shook her friend until Shirley came to. Shirley had a dull, lifeless expression, and she spoke through her fake smile, with a chipmunk-like voice.
"You and Lenny are in... How can that be? Tee-hee! He has a stuffed iguana, Laverne! Are you going to be an iguana's mommy?"
Laverne shook her again: "Ok, snap out of it, Shirl. You're starting to freak me out here a little. And stop talking like that. You sound like our old teacher, Mrs. Buttonsquad. She lived with twenty parrots, Shirl..."
Lenny came out of the room running holding a bat above his head.
"I found the bat, Laverne! I'm off to rescue Shirley!" he shouted as he stormed out of the apartment.
Laverne shook her head and said to herself: "It's gotta be love."
