Title: The Night that Determined Their Life

Category: Shirley and Carmine Romance

Notes: This all takes place in California.

Summary: One night might change Shirley and Carmine's whole life together.

Shirley opened her eyes and tried to focus on what was in front of her. When she finally did, she jolted up in the bed and looked around. She noticed she wasn't in her own apartment with Laverne with their sink between the beds. She was in a hot, stuffy, apartment with posters of famous dancers and big Broadway plays with a box full of old dance shoes between the small bed and the other mountain of boxes on the other side.

Shirley looked over to her right and saw someone lying there, with dark curly hair and a sweet familiar face. If Shirley wasn't kidding herself, she thought it was Carmine. She looked closer and noticed it was. She now recognized the stuffy unfinished apartment and the man lying next to her sound asleep. Shirley then clutched the covers around her chest and thought again. She wondered why she was in Carmine's apartment and why she was in his bed. She then noticed that she was holding the covers around her. She knew it then. She had made the biggest mistake of her life.

She felt the bed move and looked back to Carmine. He was waking up. He looked at her and then sat up too. He leaned over to kiss her and Shirley showed no emotion. She sat there with her mouth slightly open and big eyes. She just starred at the covers.

Carmine: Hi Angelface. ANGELFACE!

Shirley: Carmine, what did I do? What did WE do?

Carmine: I don't know, why are you here? Why are you in MY bed?

Shirley: I don't know! But I have a feeling that we might have done something incredibly wrong.

Carmine: Did we have fun?
Shirley: I'm sure! Oh Carmine how did we let this happen?

Carmine: Now clam down Shirl! I'm sure that we didn't do it in out right minds.

Shirley: Wait, where were we last night?

Carmine: We... I don't remem- oh wait, we were at that party at Lenny and Squiggy's!

Shirley: And what do you suppose we did there?

Carmine: Get in a not so sober state!

Shirley: I think you're right. But how could we have done what we think we did? How could we have thought that?

Carmine: How do we know if we did what we think we did?

Shirley: What? Isn't laying underneath the covers obviously with nothing on give enough clues that we did what we think we did?

Carmine: Yeah, I guess so!

Shirley: Well...

Carmine: Well... it's kinda depressing ya know? I mean, the first time we did it and we don't even remember it or know what it was like.

Shirley: Yeah, it is. But this isn't the time to think about how we don't know what it was like. We gotta get outta here. I mean, I do... I gotta back to my apartment and go to work.

She started to get up and realized she had a headache that would kill her if she didn't sit still. So she put her hands to her temples and leaned back against the head of the bed with the covers still at her chest.

Carmine: What's wrong? Hang over.

Shirley: No, no, just a headache?

Carmine: Yeah, hang over! They're a bitch aren't they?

He started to get up and then realized he had a headache too. He leaned back against the bed and they both laid there holding their heads and closing their eyes from the pain.

Shirley: Yeah, they're a bitch!

Carmine: Yeah, yeah, so what now?

Shirley: I don't know. I guess I gotta get to work or something.

Carmine: You can't go to work in that condition! You won't make it through the first 5 minutes of the day!

They heard a knock at the door. Carmine grabbed his robe that was lying on the floor and slipped it on and staggered to the door. Shirley got up and wrapped the covers around her more. Carmine opened the door and in came Laverne, frantic.

She pushed Carmine away and walked toward Shirley knocked her on the bed giving Shirley an even worse headache.

Laverne: Shirley Whilimena Feeney! You could have at least let me know that you were here doing something! I was worried! I could hardly sleep!

Shirley: Shh! Not so loud Laverne.

Laverne: Oh great, I guess you got it too!

Shirley: Got what? The headache that's about to kill me? You're damn right sister!

Laverne: No, no! Lenny and Squiggy were giving out drinks that had A LOT of alcohol in them! You would never had gotten drunk on propose! Just one sip on what they had served and boom, you're in bed and probably made the biggest mistake of you're whole life.

Shirley: Thanks! That's all I needed!

Laverne: So, wait, I'm just figuring this out! You mean that you and Carmine? Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!

She got a sly grin and looked at them.

Shirley: Laverne, you know where I am, now LEAVE!

Laverne: But Shirl, I gotta ask you, how was it?

Shirley: Sadly I don't remember! NOW LEAVE!

Laverne turned and walked out. Her hand slipped on the doorknob leaving the door to slam shut and Shirley and Carmine shirking from the pain.

Carmine walked back over to the bed and sat next to Shirley.

Carmine: Great...so what are we gonna do now?
Shirley: Probably raise a child. What do you think of that?

Carmine: Sounds...fun...I guess.

It was later on into the day and Shirley had gotten dressed and went back home. She was sitting on the couch with an ice pack on her head when Lenny and Squiggy came barreling through the door. Shirley looked at them and jumped up.

Shirley: Oh no you don't! You're not coming into MY house after I slept in someone's and did something I wasn't planning to do until my wedding night! And it's all because of YOU! Now you can both march your slimy little bodies out of MY house and NEVER EVER come back through that door unless I've been reincarnated and none of this happened, because you can't turn back time now!

She had managed to back them both up against the door and was in their faces. They both had scared faces from her yelling.

Lenny: Wow!

Squiggy: Uh, sorry Shirl.

Shirley: No! Sorry does not undo it! SO LEAVE!

Squiggy: Yes, yes. We know.

Shirley: OK, well now that you do LEAVE!

Lenny: Wait...we wanted to be completely sane for a moment and tell you...

Squiggy: That if you ARE pre-, pre-, going to have a child...

Lenny: That we would pay for all the things you gotta pay for in that situation.

Shirley's face got softer and she backed away. A small smile formed on her face.

Shirley: Guys that's so sweet! I've never heard you guys say anything that sweet to me.

She reached for them and hugged them both and all three of them stood there for a moment hugging.

Squiggy: And we also wanted to ask: What do you think if I got calf implants? Do you thi-

Shirley: Goodbye and thank you!

She pushed them out of the door and she sat back down. She them heard another knock and got back up to answer it. It was Carmine.

Shirley: Hi sweetheart.

Carmine: Hi! Look, let's go to the doctor ok?

Shirley: Right now?

Carmine: Yes! I want to know if we are gonna start a family together and if not then I think it's high time we should.

Shirley: What if we're not going to raise a family now?

Carmine: Then either way, I'm gonna ask you to marry me and I'll sweep you off your feet and carry you to the nearest bed where we can enjoy each other and the one thing we don't remember from last night.

Shirley: Carmine...

Carmine: Wait...and I'll do that because I love you and I don't want any other man being with you. I want to be with you forever and start a family and granted that we have been together since high school, we seem like we're ready.

Shirley: Oh Carmine...you really are wonderful you know that?

Carmine: Yeah well, let's go!

He grabbed her purse from the chair and ran back out the door with Shirley's wrist in his hand.

It was later that day around 7:30 P.M. and Shirley and Carmine walked in. The lights were off and it was dark. Shirley walked over to the blue chair and sat her purse down. She kept her back turned to the door. Carmine walked over to her and put his arms around her waist. He was standing behind her and he kissed her cheek.

Carmine: It's ok Shirl. They'll be other chances. We have the rest of our lives to decide if we're gonna have children.

Shirley: Yeah, you're right. I guess I'm kinda glad too. I mean, now we can actually know what it will be like without having to wait 9 months.

Carmine: What are you saying?

Shirley: Carmine, you remember when you said earlier that if we're weren't going to have children that you would carry me off to the nearest bed?

Carmine: Oh yeah!

He smiled and she turned around to face him. They started to make out and they staggered up stairs. When they got up there, they closed the door and Carmine pushed Shirley against the door while they were still kissing. They then heard something. They stopped and looked around. The light was off so they turned it on and there in the bed was Laverne glaring up at them.

Laverne: Well, well, well.

Shirley: Laverne! I forgot about you being here!

Laverne: Yeah, yeah. So what did they doctor say?

Shirley: I'm not pregnant.

Laverne: That's weird.

Shirley: Yeah, I don't know how we did it and I didn't get pregnant.

Carmine: Maybe we didn't do it.

Shirley: But why were we the way we were if you know what I mean?

Carmine: I don't know. Maybe...I don't know. Hey, let's go to my place.

Shirley: Good idea. See ya later Laverne!

They left and Laverne fell back down and turned the light off.
