Scene One:
Shirley sat up slowly in her bed and looked around the room. She looked over at the bed beside her and saw Laverne sleeping soundly. She wondered why she couldn't be sleeping soundly like Laverne. She glanced over at the clock and brought it close her face so she could read the time. It was 3:40 A.M. She laid the clock back down and fell back down on her pillow and starred at the ceiling. She had not been sleeping very well lately. She thought about everything that was going on in her life and thought of all the possible reasons she was waking up so much. There wasn't anything bothering her, at least she didn't think so. She thought and thought until she had to get up and do something to get her mind off of thinking something was wrong with her and besides, she couldn't go to sleep. She slowly got out of her bed and stumbled to the door and walked down the stairs to the kitchen.
Everything was right where it had been before, so she knew that no one was messing around in her house. She opened the refrigerator to find only a bright light shining in her eyes. She squinted and closed the door. She leaned against the door for a second. She started to feel sorry for herself. Things for her had been rough and she had no idea why. She was always waking up in the middle of the night and could never go back to sleep, which caused her to be very tired throughout the day, and her luck was always bad also. And now she was just sure that something was wrong with her. She knew she wasn't pregnant, and she hoped she wasn't crazy. She thought of everything and decided it was stress. But the reason it was stress because she woke up so much in the first place. She decided not to think about and staggered up stairs and got back in bed and tried to slowly go back to sleep.
It was 6:30 A.M. and Shirley heard a loud yell in her ear. She sat up and bonked heads with Laverne who had been trying to wake her up.
Laverne: Ow! Watch it Shirl!
Shirley: Well it was your fault! You shouldn't have been yelling in my ear anyway! What time is it? Why are you- WORK! Oh Lord we're gonna be late! Come on, come on! We gotta go!
She pushed Laverne off her bed and tripped over a stranded shoe staggered the rest of the way to the closet until she realized what Laverne was saying.
Laverne: Uh, Shirl, it's Saturday. We don't have work!
Shirley stopped and turned around slowly and starred into her eyes with a mean look.
Shirley: Then why did you wake me up?
Laverne: Because you're father is coming for a visit and I thought we should get an early start on cleaning up like you like to whenever someone is coming over...what's wrong?
Shirley: Laverne, I've been up every night at 3:00 for the last week, and you have been nothing but an annoyance! Every day it's always something, and I've avoided hurting you for that week ONLY because I didn't have the strength at the moment!
Laverne: What are you saying?
Shirley: I'm saying that I'm at my wits end and I'm ready to rumble whenever you are sister! So get your boxing gloves 'cause I'm gonna shut you up if it kills me! OR YOU!
Laverne: Whoa! Now calm down Shirl! It's not my fault I was doing what you always tell me to do whenever someone is coming! And it's not my fault I was trying to do something for you to make you happy and be a nice friend! Jeez! Excuse me for trying to be kind and nice! Forget that! I'll just leave the house a mess and never speak to you again!
Laverne stormed pass her and out the room and Shirley heard the front door slam a few seconds after. She stomped her foot and wondered why she said anything in the first place. But it left her mind when she remember what this whole thing were about: her father! He was coming to visit. She had to get the house in better shape and wished Laverne was there to talk to her and help her clean. She just threw her hands up and decided she would do it herself. So she threw on some messy clothes a little apron with a bandana over her head and starting cleaning everything.
After a while, around 12:00, she heard a knock at the door. She walked over and opened it and it was Carmine. Just the person she was hoping it would be.
Carmine: Hi Angelface! Can I come in?
Shirley: Hi Carmine! Yeah, come in.
Lately Shirley and Carmine had been seeing other people and had not been in a relationship. They hadn't really seen each other all week except when passing through the halls. Shirley thought maybe that was a reason she was having trouble sleeping, along with her father coming, and now Laverne being mad.
Carmine walked in and looked the apartment over. He started shaking his head as if to approve of her good housework.
Carmine: Looks good Shirl!
Shirley: Thanks, I'm still working on it though.
Carmine: Oh, where's Laverne? She usually helps you with this kinda stuff.
Shirley: Oh, we had a fight and she left. It was my fault and I should have gone after her, but I was just thinking about too much and was so mad at her I just... didn't.
Carmine noticed Shirley looking down and noticed that when she walked across the room that she seemed to be dragging herself and acting like she was about to cry and was pushing herself to do everything.
Carmine...oh...you okay Shirl? You look.... tired.
Shirley: Oh Carmine, ha! Tired doesn't explain the way I feel right now and how I've felt all week!
Carmine: Well what's wrong?
He grabbed her arm and made her sit down.
Carmine: Hey, hey, chill a second! Sit down and tell me what's wrong Shirl.
Shirley: Oh, I don't know. I guess just with my father coming and all it's got me worked up and I just didn't know it did. I've been waking up every night and I can never go back to sleep so the whole day I have to struggle to stay awake and get through without killing someone or snapping their heads off because I'm so tired and cranky.
Carmine: That's it?
Shirley: What do you mean that's it?! What else did you expect? What did you want me to say? I'm tired and worn out! What did you want to hear?
Carmine: Nothing...nothing! I was just making sure that's all that was wrong. Look, can I help you with any of this?
Shirley: No, I'm fine. But thanks. Um, was there anything you needed?
Carmine: Oh well there...no. No I just wanted to say hey! Bye!
Shirley: Bye.
He left and Shirley plopped on the couch and dozed off.
((Shirley's dream))
Shirley was standing on the side of the road and saw it all. The car was going along at a normal pace. Out of the blue came another car, speeding and driving recklessly. Finally, the two cars reached and BAM!
Shirley woke up. She sat straight up and screamed. She rubbed her forehead. She then heard the door bell ring again. She got and it was her father.
Shirley: Daddy!
Mr. Feeney: Shirley! How are you? I'm so glad to see you!
Shirley: Oh daddy, I'm glad to see you too! I'm sorry I look really bad, I've been cleaning up for you!
Mr. Feeney: Oh please! You look wonderful! So tell me, how have things been?
Shirley and her father began to talk and they talked for hours. It was getting later and Shirley's mind began to wonder elsewhere. She was wondering where Laverne was and where Carmine went too. Mostly about where Laverne was. She was worried and her father could tell.
Mr. Feeney: Shirl, you okay hun?
Shirley: Huh? Oh yes...well I just don't know where Laverne is.
Mr. Feeney: Oh, well look sweetie, I'm going to go out to get some gas for my car. I have to leave early tomorrow as you know, and I want to have that done. So I'll see you later!
He kissed her and hugged her and said I love you, then left. She couldn't believe it. He totally blew off Laverne. Well, she knew one thing, she wasn't going to. She didn't care how tired she was, she had to find out where Laverne was. So she grabbed her purse and ran out the door. She first went to people's apartments in the building and no one had seen her. She ran to Carmine's and frantically knocked on the door. He opened it and behind him she could see something. She pushed the door open, hoping to see Laverne, but to her surprise, it was another women.
Shirley: Oh, I'm so sorry Carmine. I...I thought that was Laverne. I....sorry.
She put her head down and tried to hid the tear that fell from her eye. She didn't know it, but the lady in his apartment was his cousin and Carmine was after Shirley trying to catch up with her. Finally at the entrance he caught up with her. He gently grabbed her arm.
Carmine: Shirl!
Shirley: Oh Carmine!
She whipped away the tears and looked at him.
Carmine: Shirl, what's wrong?
Shirley: Nothing Carmine. I have to go now.
Carmine: Shirl, we have always told each other what's on our minds.
Shirley: Yeah well things are changing in case you haven't noticed! We aren't as close and now that you have all these girlfriends, I don't see where you'd have any room for my thoughts or any time for me!
Carmine: Shirl that was my cousin! And I haven't had a REAL girlfriend since you! That's why I came over today. I wanted to ask you out, but you seemed busy and tired that I just thought you wanted to be alone.
Shirley: Oh, Carmine...why didn't you tell me?
Carmine:...I guess since we've been...farther apart.
Shirley: Yeah...I guess so. Look Carmine, I really gotta go now. We'll talk about this later.
Carmine: Wait! Where are you going?
Shirley: I...I have to find Laverne.
Carmine: What do you mean?
Shirley: We got into a fight and she stormed out. I didn't go after her, which I should have, and now I don't where she is. I also want to know where my father is because he left and said he would be back, but you know how he is when he says things like that. He never does...I gotta-
Right then they both heard a big crash of lightning and Carmine grabbed her and pulled her close to him and into the building more as a tree fell right in front of where they were standing.
Carmine: Are you sure you wanna go out there in this weather?
Shirley: Yes! I am! I have to Laverne! I don't want her out there in this weather!
Carmine: But Shirl, I don't want you out in this weather either.
Shirley: Then get over it or come with me! Because I'm gotta find her and I'm gonna stay here!
Carmine: ...fine! Let's go.
They headed out and right then, Carmine stopped Shirley and pulled her closer to him slowly and kissed her gently. They stood there forever in the rain. Shirley felt they could stand there for an eternity. Then she remember Laverne and pulled away slowly. They smiled and then ran to find Laverne.
They walked next to each other in the rain holding their hoods with both hands. Carmine took one hand off of his head and grabbed Shirley's hand that was dangling by her side as she walked. So they walked on in the rain, hand in hand.
After a minute they saw some car lights coming from a small area of woods.
Shirley: Let's go over there.
Carmine: Why?
Shirley: It could be her!
Carmine: I don't think it will be...ok.
So they crossed the street and walked through the small woods. They soon reached the side of a two-lane road that was lined with palm trees for miles long. They saw the head lights of a car that was driving along unsteadily. In the other lane they saw a truck going along its normal speed. They both stood there and saw the whole thing. They knew it was coming. The rain was beating hard and as the two cars approached each other, the unsteady car swerved into the other lane right in front of the truck whole slammed on the breaks, but he was too late. Right when a crash of thunder came, they hit...

Shirley and Carmine were inches away from both cars and it was almost as if it was happening in slow motion. Shirley's hand flew to mouth in shock.
Shirley looked in the window, from where she was standing, and saw a man laying on the steering wheel with blood coming from his head. Her hand slowly dropped as she squinted at the man. She then remember her dream. She felt a huge cloud of shock come over her. It was her father...
