"H'lo?"

"Hello."

Lenny almost dropped the phone at the familiar, nasal greeting.

"Squig?" he asked hoarsely.

"Yep, it's me."

Lenny tried to rest himself against an elbow, but slipped off. He noticed Laverne slipping out of the bed; she gestured toward the bathroom to explain her absence.

There was a short, uncomfortable silence on the phone.

"So-" they both began at the same time. Lenny laughed nervously and he could hear Squiggy do the same thing on the other end of the line.

Another brief, squirmy silence.

"How're you doin'" Squiggy asked.

"Good." Lenny cleared his throat to rid himself of his suddenly cracking voice. "The trip's been real good. Seen a lot of neat stuff along the way."

"Hope ya got some pictures of it," Squiggy said politely.

"Oh yeah. Ya know Laverne. Can't go anywhere without her camera."

Lenny suddenly winced at his slip of mentioning Laverne's name. He could practically hear Squiggy tensing over the phone.

"How're you doin', Squig?" Lenny asked quickly before an awkward silence settled on them once again.

"Oh, good. Ya know, I moved back to Milwaukee after you..." Squiggy trailed off, but quickly found his words again. "Yeah, got a job and stuff. Thing's have been goin' real good here."

"That's good," Lenny said politely. "Ya know, we're trying to get to Nashville."

"Yeah," Squiggy said harshly. He coughed and composed himself. "Yeah, that's what Carmine told me. Gonna stay with Angie and try to get things going down there. That's good. I'm sure you'll make it."

"Really?"

"Yeah." Squiggy's voice was softer now and he once again coughed to get it back to normal. "Yeah, I always knew you were good."

"Ya know, if I do make it down here, I'm gonna need a manager. Maybe you could do it, huh?" Lenny said hopefully.

"Yeah, maybe, I dunno." Squiggy shrugged and nearly dropped the phone. "With my new job and stuff..."

"Oh, yeah, I understand."

There was a long, sad pause.

"So," Lenny said, "how 'bout I call ya when we get to Nashville, huh?"

"Yeah," Squiggy said. He began to recite his phone number.

"Hold on..." then he heard a bristling sort of rustling on his end of the line, muffled cursing. "Okay, all I got is this little napkin, and I ain't got much room, so say it slow, okay?"

Squiggy then read each number off again, this time in a deliberately slow, syrupy drawl.

Their goodbyes were short and awkward, but at least, Squiggy thought as he hung up the phone and stared at the wall, he got to say it this time.
