heard all about your fandango
banged on my knees on your back door
only to wake you to blues on the way
"Len, watch out for the cactus!"
Lenny winced as his thigh scraped along the back of the cactus.
"Did it cut you?"
He shook his head, and still he looked ready to cry.
"Lemme see your leg."

"It's not cut...just a little scrape."
"It ain't the scrape, Vernie." He pulled away from her. "Where did Squiggy go? Why'd he hang up on me when I told him. I thought he'd be happy for me."
"Cause you left without telling him."
"What'd he expect me to do? He was out with Francine. Ever since I started up with Karen, he's been seein' Francine like it was goin' out of style. I kept tryin' to say something for two weeks, but then he'd start talking about Squignoski again."
"Sounds like me and Shirl. We'd always go out on dates together, 'cause if one of us went out more often we'd get jealous. That was before her and Carmine." She took a long sip from her icy beer. "Why's the desert have to be so hot?" She wondered.
"Yeah, hot." He stared at her.
"Come on; The Alamo closes in two hours, and it's fifteen minutes back to the main road. 'Cause you had to have a picture with a cactus!"
He lifted his chin. "It looks neat with my shirt."
"It does." She agreed, very mildly, as they pulled back onto the road.

He watched her drink as they drove downtown; he was surprised by how close to the Gulf they seemed. It could be an illusion. He was exhausted.
And then, before him, the white stone mission rose from the cool concrete.
They parked and were ferried in; past the statues of Boone and the painted displays. In a stone-walled room hung the state flags of the many people who had died at their feet centuries before.
It was eerily peaceful.
He wrapped his arm around her waist, and she leaned against his chest. Even in the dry, hot air, the contact felt erotic and yet comforting. They had spent the entire afternoon in frolic, peeking into cheesy museums and tourist traps, taking pictures with cactuses. It proved to be a small reminder of all of the reasons she loved being with Lenny. That their love went beyond the physical realms.
"I got something to tell you."

He listened, his chin at the top of her head.
"I tried to call my Pop, but he wouldn't pick up. So I called Carmine, cause I don't have Shirl's number. And he told me where Squiggy is."
She let out a squeal when he picked her up. For a long minute, it didn't matter that everyone in the museum was staring; Lenny was happy.
"Why'd you wait until now to tell me?"
"I wanted it to be quiet. And I wanted to make you happy." Laverne said, simply.
"I am." He pointed out.
"We've got the cash; why don't you call him today?"
"Nah; We got a day until we get to Louisiana, then another day to Mississippi."
"Why wait?"
"Cause..." He whispered the next part in her ear. "I wanna be alone with ya in Louisianna."
"We are alone."
"Really alone."
