SPOILLER/SUMMARY: Laverne watches the Knapp Street Building as it's torn down.
NOTES: For Eva, on the occasion of her birthday.

****

She watched in silence as the wrecking ball swung through what had once been their bedroom window.

It seemed a painful conscription upon the die she had cast for herself. First it had burned, then vermin had infested it, and now it was being destroyed so they could build a skyscraper in its place.

Bitterly, she wished for Shirley. Shirley could always make it right. Shirley could always show her what to do.

But Shirley had left her.

Some part of her, still innocent, wished that she could have shown Shirley the extent of her love. But Shirley had shown her shame. They could not go backwards.

She supposed that was for the best. Her family had scattered. Her friends were at loggerhead. And her best friend, one of the few people who'd ever stuck by here, was in Guam, married and pregnant.

She watched as the wrecking ball crashed into the living room, spraying plaster everywhere.

It looked just like her divided heart.
