"Okay, okay, that's the end of the take."
It took Lenny a few moments to realize that he had kept his eyes shut for the duration of his audition. His fingers fell still, and he watched Leather's face through the glass.
Her wide grin betrayed all. Slapping her thighs and snapping her fingers, she proclaimed, "you're in, Kosnowski!"
He had paused, his mouth wide open, in disbelief. Then he tore out of the booth and picked up Laverne, holding her over his head to her cries of delight.
"We did it, Vernie!"
"Nah, this is all you, Len." She hugged him. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Nah, without you I ain't nothin' but spit on the ground!"
Her nose wrinkled. "Nice image, Len."
"Lenny, if I may call ya that, you can start today. I record vocal with guitar, and I play rhythm. You get to play lead."
"That's terrific; how many songs?"
"Four."
"Four...I don't think I kin learn so many in a day..."
"Don't worry; you won't have to. I ain't ever written a song that's more than three chords. And ya just played five for me, with progression. The guy I fired didn't even know progression. Found him in New York off the punk scene." She sighed dramatically. "Okay, the first one's called 'Mine and Ours'; it's a couple of minors, in the key of Gb..."
A knock sounded at the door. "Miss Tuscadaro?"
She turned. "It's Leather, and if ya wanna get technical, you're gonna have to call me Mrs. Malph..."
"Mrs. Malph, someone's been waffling into the switchboard trying to get ahold of a Mr. Kosnowski..."
"That's me!"
"He's on the line now, sir."
"Go ahead." Leather announced, and Laverne followed at his heel.
Lenny already stood in the office, listening. "Hello? Yeah, I can hear ya, Squig...what? Oh...Oh, that's...but I can't...Squig, I have to record...Rhonda ain't gonna die, is she? No? Okay...Squig, I ain't gonna be able to fly out there! If the baby's...if somethin's happening, you call back, and me and Laverne'll get out there, I swear...Squig, don't yell at me! I hate it when ya do that! No, I care, but I got a life here too! Goodbye!" He slammed the phone down, his shoulders rising in a vain effort to control himself.
"Len, what's goin' on?"
He sighed. "Rhonda got into a car accident out in the canyon. She's okay, but they're monitoring the baby."
"Len! And you were yellin' at Squig!"
"I had to! He was yellin' at me, an' I couldn't hear myself over him, an'" He groaned. "Rhonda's gonna be okay, either way. That's what he said the doctor told him. I wanna be there real bad, but I can't, and-"
"I can go."
He shook his head. "Uh-uh. He didn't even mention you; he just wanted me." Lenny shrugged, then called back into the studio. "Leather, you ready?"
"Let's go for it." Lenny said, strolling back into the studio, oblivious to his bride's angry glare.
