"Mom, have you seen my backpack?"
Shirley Feeney...well, Ragusa now, she supposed, glanced up from the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches she had been meticulously crafting. Veenie stood in the hallway, frowning. Shirley sniffled.
"Oh mom..."
"I can't believe it! My little girl's going to first grade!"
She sighed. "Yes, mom. And last year, I went to kindergarten!"
"Don't speak smartly to me!" Shirley cried. "Oh, my little girl..."
"Mom...do you think I could have a frog for my birthday?"
"A frog?" She made a face. "Honey, frogs are all...slimy."
"But it's what I want."
Shirley smiled. "But who's going to clean the bowl?"
"Me!"
"But!"
"PLEASE?! I'll just ask Carmine and then..."
Shirley threw her hands up in defeat at the sound of Carmine's name. There was no easy way to tell her little girl that "uncle" Carmine may not be coming back...that she had been deserted on her wedding night and had fled California as quickly as she could. "Okay, fine." The phone rang. "Ugh; your bag's under your bed. Go get it and then I'll walk you to school..."
She raced off to the phone as Veenie headed to her room. "Hello? Squiggy? Squiggy, I can't hear you. You sound hysterical...What...Oh my goodness...I'll tell Carmine when he arrives. Please, Squiggy, don't panic...Okay, I'll go. I have to get Veenie to school." She hung up the phone and hung perfectly still for a moment.
"Mom? Mom, what's wrong."
She trembled, unable to hide the truth from her daughter. "Your Aunt Rhonda was in a car accident. They're not sure if her baby will make it."
