Laverne and Lenny landed at Milwaukee International late in the afternoon. Exhausted, they dragged themselves through the baggage claim and stumbled into a cab.
Lenny's eyes remained wide-open as they traversed the streets. Nothing had changed since their engagement, of course, but there were striking differences between their teenage haunts and the current town.
Things seemed brighter, shinier, in places, but also grimier in the gutters. It wasn't as safe as it once had been, too.
They pulled up before a brick building in downtown. He poked Laverne awake, and she paid for the cab while he got the luggage.
Standing on the curb, they both took a long look at the neon sign before them: Bottleneck Studio, the recording home of Leather Tuscadaro. Lenny buzzed the bell.
"Bottleneck Studios?" Queried a voice at the other end.
"Lenny Kosnowski's here." Lenny announced.
"Yo, Lenny!" The voice turned clearly into Leather's. "I'll buzz you in!" As if by magic, the metallic front door slipped open, and Lenny and Laverne dragged their suitcases up two flights of stairs and into the lobby of Bottleneck Studios.
A moment later they were swept inside of the studio. Leather greeted Lenny and Laverne with her customary handshake, and Laverne got an eyeful of what upcoming motherhood could do for a woman; in Leather's case, it seemed to make her more voluptuous. Lenny noticed, and another elbow found its way into his side.
"I'm happy Fonz passed me that copy of the Ocean Breeze's record; your licks are smoking hot."
Lenny gritted his teeth against further confirmation that Fonzie had given his career a boost. "Uh, yeah, that was real nice of him." He put down the luggage and removed his guitar from its case.
"I think I woulda found you anyway. That album's still hot in New York. You heard anything from your agent that it's gonna go national?"
Lenny shrugged as he strapped the instrument on. "He said something about California." Laverne's turn to grit her teeth at the idea of so many people seeing her face.
Leather smiled, sitting down gingerly in a chair and patting the one beside her, urging Laverne to settle down there without further discussion. Laverne glanced at the chair and then at Leather's pleading face and settled down.
"Okay, this is take one; ya know the chords to 'All Shook Up,' right?"
"Uh-huh." He strode into the recording booth, plugging in and setting a pair of earphones onto his head.
"Okay, let's see what you can do."
Lenny took a deep breath, waited for the downbeat to start. His eyes locked on Laverne's, he strummed the first chord.
