He played with the tie at the front of his shirt, one leg draped over the hard wood railing. The wind is so cold that it feels like his kneecap is being pinched between wintergreen fingers.

Why in the world would anyone stick a railing between a lake and the land. It seemed to spoil the naturalized world, the unbroken flow.

He points his nose in the air, absorbing the flecks of moisture trickling down from the sky. Across the water there are so many lights, and one of them is hers. If he had the courage, he would swim across, but his base cowardliness saves him once more, sends him back.

There's a gig to play, even though he's grown to hate it, it's still a commitment to fill.

He closes his eyes. "Laverne loves me." He says it again, under his breath, so quietly that it wasn't audible above the sound of a screaming guitar.

He turned, smiling for the audience as he bounded onto the stage.
