***

He had moved to California for one reason: the babes.

They were everywhere; in the sand, on the boulevard, in the waves.

He didn't want any of them. Only her.

I see so many golden women;
when they walk their feet don't touch the ground.
How I want, how I want to deserve you.

First he had fought it; then he had projected it. Then he had fought her for that love, and finally he had given up.

And then she had come to him.

But me, I'm always out of rhythm.
My needs too demanding, too proud.
How I want, how I want to deserve you.

Sonny had left; without a backward glance. Just packed up his bag without a note. The studio wouldn't tell her where he had gone.

They had gotten drunk, and so fallen in bed together.

I didn't want you to see me like this.
The light of the dawn can be cruel.

She lay in his bed; the sparseness of the blanket covering them showing just how little he could provide her. But she had given of herself, purely, unselfishly. Beautifully. Without fear.

And if I could be granted a wish,
I'd shine in your eye like a jewel.

Oh, how he wanted to be perfect; her provider and savior. He could do it, but did she have the faith?

God, he was pathetic.

I would die for you.
Could you ever love me that much?

Fear was what he felt now; could he ever live up to the golden prince she deserved? Last night, she had used the word 'love' in orgasm. Something common, something he had done.

But never without meaning it.

I didn't want you to see me like this.
I'm weak and I fight like a fool.
How I want, how I want to deserve you.

He felt stupid and girly; oooh, does she love me, does she really?

Was it possible? Could anyone...really love him?

If I could be your angel
I'd trade in my arms for some wings
to keep you close to me.

He wanted to hide her under the bed; keep her safe and sweet. Away from the damage of his touch. Away from what he feared he could wreak.

And if I could trade my voice
for the silence I know that you need.

She stirred, displacing the blanket. Her curve-free but supple body laid bare; her constant fearlessness so clear, so obvious.

I didn't want you to see me like this.
So frightened of losing so soon.
How I want, how I want to deserve you.

"Morning." She said, "What're you don'?"

And if I've caught our love in a grip,
just tell me and I'll shake it loose.
How I want to deserve you.

His fingers slid down the neck of his guitar, "I heard a song, and it's about you. Wanna hear it?"

She smiled.

He began.

The End!
