****

Laverne had fallen asleep in Lenny's arms by noon. It was the only time Carmine had left to reflect in silence.

Portland was a few miles away, as was Shirley's place. He knew where she lived; a little white house with a picket fence, where she and her children had lived with Walter ever since his army discharge.

Damnit.

He should've stood up during the ceremony; married her when he had the chance. His emotional state was being complicated by Laverne, which wasn't a good thing. He wasn't entirely sure if he loved her; it was more likely that he simply wanted to protect her from the violent, elemental world they had been plunged into.

Goddamned gypsy bitch. If she hadn't decided to tell Laverne that she was going to drop dead at the end of the week, he wouldn't be driving to Portland to rendevous with Shirley. He wondered momentarily if it was wise of them not to head to Milwaukee for the reunion, where the girls had orriginally planned to meet. The letter Laverne had received two days before her suicide attempt should have altered her destiny.

Two minutes to Portland...

But Laverne had never read the letter. He broke out in a cold sweat.

She hadn't even made a peep when they told her that they were headed to Portland to see Shirley.

Why hadn't she asked him a single question about the choice to head to Portland?

Sirens wailed behind him. Two police cars bore down on the vehicle.

Shit...they weren't going to make it to Portland after all....
