"What's goin' on?!" Laverne demanded, but she couldn't turn her head.

"Someone's coded." Shirley said tiredly, "I've heard it so many times in this place that I'm almost immune to the sound."

"It's Squiggy's room!" Laverne panicked, "I heard it, it was Squiggy's room!"

"Laverne, calm down...I'll see what I can do." Shirley's progress to the door felt too slow. Laverne closed her eyes against the commotion, the noise, the frantic pain of her life.

Shirley re-appeared. "Laverne?" Her touch was gentle. "It was Squiggy, but he's stabilized."

"Oh, thank God..." Laverne didn't want to cry anymore; exhaustion brought on by her own tears felt most present at the moment. "I'm gonna sleep, OK, Shirl?"

Shirley nodded, "OK, Vernie. I'll be here when you wake up."

**

Laverne wasn't surprised to wake to the sound of a doctor's voice.

"...Should be normal now. Oh, Miss DeFazio; you're awake."

She tried to smile, "You're my doctor."

He nodded, "I've been taking care of the victims of your tragic accident, yes. We're sorry for the loss of your friends."

"Sure," She sighed, "What is it, Doc?"

"Well, we came to tell you that your condition is improving. You should be able to leave your bed soon."

"Then I can see Len?"

He smiled, "Your fiancé is heavily medicated at the moment. I'm afraid that he won't be very responsive to your presence." He clutched her medical charts closer to his chest, "I'm afraid that we're here for another reason, as well. Your friend, Mr. Squiggman; do you know if he would want to be kept alive through artificial means?

"What? I thought he was fine."

"Don't panic, but I'm afraid he's slipped into a coma. He's on life support."

Laverne moaned, sinking against the bed.

"I'm afraid we can't reach his family. You'll have to make the crucial decision, Ms. DeFazio."

"What decision?"

"Whether he should be kept on life support," the physician said, "Or be disconnected."
