"Squiggy!"
Squiggy instinctively winced backwards against the nearest wall at the too-cheerful tone of Laverne's voice.
"I swear, the register was empty when I got here."
"I know, I cleaned it out last night. Squig, I'm real sorry I haven't been nice to ya lately..."
"I'm used ta it."
Laverne heaved a cross sigh. "Do you wanna have a beer?"
Squiggy considered this. "You paying?"
"Always."

Lenny stroked the shiny surface before him, joyful in his sense of accomplishment. His first real attempt at body work hadn't resulted in a severed limb, or his hair being lit on fire.
"Whattya think, Fonz?"
Fonzie yawned.
"That's kinda mean."
"Hey, it ain't nothing against you. I'm just real tired."
"Musta been a long flight." Lenny hadn't tried to pry into the business of his boss, but he knew that Fonzie's trip to California had resulted in both joy and his being rather tired the next morning.
"Worth it." He watched Lenny's work with appreciation. "You're doin' pretty good, Kosnoski."
"Yeah? It ain't nothing special..."
"Yeah, it is. Look, I got something I wanna ask you."
"Sure...just lemme get this..."
"No. It can't wait."
Lenny turned on his knees, listening to Fonzie's very serious tone, he didn't want to risk not looking into the greaser's face. "Yeah?"
"I'm gonna be spending more and more time on the other coast; Richie Cunningham's gonna put me up in his house for a little while, til I can get a house. There ain't gonna be anyone here to keep an eye on things regular."
"Yeah?"
"What I'm sayin' is that I wanna make you a partner, Lenny. I want you ta take care of the place while I'm gone."
Lenny's jaw dropped open.
"It ain't gonna be more responsibility than usual. You fix the wrecks, you give 'em an honest price. You're just gonna be doing it with Chachi..."
"Fonz, this is real sudden..." Mentally, Lenny was busy trying to calculate how many more hours he would have to work, and if Laverne could or would accept the idea of having to spend more time alone with Squiggy.
"The pay's gonna go up. You and Laverne'll be able to live real high and well."
Lenny's eyes glittered with the imagined wealth laid before him. "I'll do it, Fonz. And I'll be good at it, too! I'll show you I can do good!"
"Your chance starts tomorrow. And Len? Don't screw up."
The tone in Fonzie's voice caused goosebumps to crawl across Lenny's skin. And not the comforting, sensual sort. Fonzie meant business, and it was his job to make sure that he was a decent employee.
