***

It had been twenty years.

She marked it every one that passed quietly. Keeping it in secret from the man she loved most. Her beautiful, golden-hared children. Everyone.

Her fingers tightened around the knife she held. What had been the greater sin? Which had been the lesser of the two evils?

With all of this negative talk, her cake was still perfect.

When had she turned into Shirley? Well, Lenny would never suggest she had. A small smile scraped across her face, disappearing with the next morbid thought. She touched her stomach, reflexively.

The kitchen door opened. "Mail, Mrs. Kosnowski."

She greeted the mailman with an affable smile, noticing the urgent letter at the top of the pile. Hillside was still a place where people could keep their doors unlocked. Laverne's haste was almost unseemly; she ran up to her bedroom and, before a picture of Lenny, opened up the document.

What she saw sent her to sobbing.

"I found him! I found him!"
