She knew something was wrong before anyone thought to tell her. She had noticed the dullness in his voice; the fading of his smile. Suddenly, he was barely eating.

The doctors had gathered around, shaking their heads; they all swore that no cure could be had for him.

What a shame...so young...so much left undone...not yet married, even!

Well, she would do something about that!

She marched right into their laboratory, rolled up her sleeves, and started boiling up some chemicals.

"Hey, lady, you're not supposed to be there!"

Eventually they gave in. They couldn't stand to see a woman cry.

You got used to the amazon after awhile. The stifling heat was bearable, and the bugs could be squashed, and you did get a nifty bawana knife to cut through the leaves.

Everyone told her that she shouldn't go, especially since she was pregnant (maybe that loving-but-desperate-denial-based roll-in-the-hay wasn't advisable at the time, but it felt right at the time). But she wouldn't sit still and let him just DIE on her.

After the natives attacked, she did give up a little hope.

But now, as she approached the fragile orange blossom growing out of the side of the baobob tree, she realized it had all been worth it.

"...Cured! A miracle!"

"Yeah, it weren't nothing, either."

"Well, you're a credit to womanhood, Miss-"

"Soon to be misses!"

"No!"

"Yes!"

"Well, congratulations to you both! I'll just leave you alone now."

"The doctor says you're all healed!"

"Yeah, and I know why, too."

"Oh, it weren't nothin'...Just a little way ta say 'I love you'."

"In another two months, you're gonna have something a whole lot bigger."

"Less than that."

"Yeah, yeah. I love you, Laverne."

"I love you, too Squiggy."

THE END!

(SWERVE!)
