Laverne shivered in Lenny's arms. How many hours had they lain there, alone on the floor of the closet?
Squiggy's fist rapped against the door. "Yer turn!"
Lenny stiffened against her. "Dress up, quick."
The dressed quickly, not quickly enough. Squiggy glimpsed the tiniest flash of bared flesh and let out a "Woah."
Lenny frowned. "You ain't tellin' no one, Squig!"
"Yeah, sure." He leered at Laverne. "How was it?"
Lenny smirked. "We got bigger things to worry about." Laverne slipped out of the door. "Vernie..."
"My turn, Len." She said. "Rest."
He nodded. Squiggy pouted.
"She's gone now, so you gotta tell me!"
Lenny smiled. "A gentleman don't tell." He said primly.
"That means she was bad."
"Squig, we're gettin' ready to fight for our lives here." He smirked, lying down on the floor. "She was great. Now shut up an' go ta sleep."
**
Laverne scratched her knee absently as she clutched the broken bottle. She was cold, confused, scared and filled with the thrill of fear.
She wanted her sweater more than anything.
She peered around her; it was quiet. Dark. They had to be asleep, right?
Laverne decided that now would be as good a time as any to get her sweater back from Shirley.
The progress downstairs to the apartment was quiet and slow. She splayed against the walls of the building at any noise.
Finally, she reached the open door of what was her home. The signs of Shirley and Squiggy's struggle were everywhere; things were scattered everywhere. Boo Boo Kitty sat, tilting over, his expression absurdly taunting.
It wasn't until she emerged from the bedroom that she heard the low sound of someone sobbing.
"Shirl?" she whispered, concearned, despite all she knew. She crept low to the floor, seeing her friend curled up into a ball. "Whatsammatta?"
"Oh, Laverne, I hurt so much, and I'm so scared."
"We gotta get out of here!"
"No! Carmine said he'd be back!"
Laverne groaned. "Carmine's crazy, Shirl. He killed my pop!"
"That's impossible...Oh God...I'm so hungry..."
"We'll get outta here, Shirl. We'll get some burgers and fries..." She offered her a hand, but froze still at its touch.
The skin was like a glaciar.
"That's not what I'm hungry for."
The change in her best friend's voice chilled Laverne. Laverne felt her nails turn to ice as she clenched Laverne's hand. That voice was the one of a practiced seducer. It was not Shirley's.
"I need something hotter. Saltier.." She purred. Laverne would never be able to erase the memory of Shirley's red eyes as she crawled across the floor. "Come on, Laverne. You know how everyone talks about us..." she sniffled the air. "You smell like him. Like chocolate. I bet his blood is just as sweet. You should bring me Lenny...we'll dine together on him, but not before we have a little..." Shirley shrieked in pain as Laverne smacked her on her shoulder, breaking her grip.
"No! I ain't gonna let myself be killed by you!" She fell against the door, knicking herself, and the scent of blood in the air made Shirley drool.
"But Laverne...I'm your best friend." She purred, leaping to her feet.
But Laverne was out the door, faster than she could respond.
"Bitch." Shirley hissed below her breath. She had only one more option now. One more source of food left...
***
Laverne ran back to the closet, hammering her fists against the door. "Lemmein!" She shrieked, and the door came flying open. She ran into Lenny's arms, sobbing.
"Shirl's a goodamed vampire, too!"
"Geez, Laverne," Squiggy complained. "I told ya that!"
"I didn't wanna believe." She whispered.
"You got no choice but to now." Lenny kissed her forehead.
Squiggy stood up straight. Hair on the back of his hands started to prickle.
"They're gettin' ready to strike." He said, his voice scarily calm.
"When?" Laverne whispered. But Squiggy was already handing Lenny a couple of broomsticks.
"Make it a cross." He encouraged.
"But when?"
Squiggy's eyes were filled with dread. "In a few minutes."

He would never forgive himself for involving her. With the bloodlust receeding and the pain of light piercing him through, he drained a bloody potroast and stared at the waning moon. He had an hour to kill the only friends he had ever known, before they destroyed him.
A skittering noise echoed through his brain; the key turning in his lock. His breath caught up in his throat. No, Shirl, don't screw your life up. Don't be on the other end of the door.
But she stood there; tiny, quiet, beautiful; she took off the kerchief she'd been wearing about her neck to conceal the twin bite marks that branded her as a vampire's thrall.
"I ain't gonna do it, Shirl."
"I want to, Carmine." She uttered simply, "Don't you see? I love you. There isn't anyone else I ever wanna be with..."
"It's too dangerous," He lamented, "You don't know what it's like to have these powers..."
"I love you, Carmine." She uttered. "It doesn't matter, as long as we're together..." Her head fell back, exposing the delicacy of her neck, "I'm not afraid, Carmine."
He stared at her, overcome by temptation. She was so willing, so completely willing; with a groan, he fell to his feast...
Damning them both. Eternally.
