Their last day at the cabin.

He understood, now, that they wouldn't get anywhere. She had tiffed with him on Saturday, teared up on Sunday, and spent Monday in stony silence.

Then she decided that maybe she'd make it up to him by prancing around in a tee-shirt and nothing much else.

He sang to himself as he tossed rocks into the pond; not even trying to skip them. Each sunk to the bottom of the lake, undisturbed by their violent sinking.

I bring all of my lovers
To the mountains
They never do forget


Her desperation sank into him, making him edgy, testy; he flashed at her with sharp glints of steely anger that caused her baby-cow eyes to turn black with fear.

How could he hurt her? He didn't have the guts.

But she didn't hesitate to turn him into a beast, looming through the overheated afternoon, baying at the sky for a little of her affection.

She loved him with a juicy intensity. It was insincere.

And yet she stood there, expecting him to love her in the middle of nowhere. Expecting him to come to her instead of just meeting him halfway.

He couldn't do it. Couldn't lie to himself anymore.
