Summary: Lenny surprises Laverne.
"Len, why'd ya drag me all the way to the
zoo?" Laverne's teeth chatter violently together as she huddles under an
elm tree in her winter coat. It's frigid, in early May, and he’s dragged her
down to the Milwaukee Zoo in the predawn hours.
Lenny grins and points up at the large, brown-spotted animal looming in front
of them. "Shh!"
She blinks, blinks again. Ginger The
Giraffe, one of the zoo’s prized animals, watched them from her pen. Laverne is
not impressed. "I've seen Ginger, Len."
Lenny points at the cage again. "You ain't seen
her new baby..."
At that moment, a much smaller figure gallops up beside its mother. A little
giraffe watches the two humans warily through the iron bars cordoning it off
from the rest of the world, curious, wary and clumsy on its knobby knees.
"I read about him bein' born in the paper this
morning," Lenny confesses. "I thought you maybe might kinda wanna go see it when it's
real early and there's no one around..."
"Yeah," Laverne smiles. "He's real cute..." The giraffes
are indeed adorable enough to make her forget about her anger. She almost wants
to hug Lenny for bringing her here. ALMOST.
Instead, she reaches for his hand, accepts the warmth of his touch.
"Thanks for bringing me here, Len."
He giggles, allowing the warmth of her hand to soak into his chilled flesh. “Anytime, Vernie.”
