Part 2 of Eternity
Part Twelve:
It was the night that Carmine had asked Shirley to marry him and Shirley felt as if she was walking on the clouds. She was at home waiting for Laverne to tell her and show her her new ring. Shirley had a blanket and was watching TV.
It was about 12:30 P.M. when Laverne walked in and saw Shirley laying there asleep on the couch. Laverne went over there see if she was awake and saw her hand there with the diamond ring and Laverne screamed, waking Shirley up. She sat up with a jolt.
Shirley: WHAT! What is it? Are you ok?
Laverne: Shirl…. What’s on your hand?
Shirley screamed and shook her hand because she thought there was a bug on her hand.
Laverne: No, no! Don’t try to get it off!
Shirley: But what if it bits me? I want it off! Get it off me Laverne!
Laverne and Shirley stared at each other for second thinking if they were talking about the same thing.
Laverne: Are we on the same track here?
Shirley: I don’t think so.
Laverne: OK…
Laverne picked Shirley’s hand up and showed her the ring.
Laverne: Well this is what I’m talkin’ about!
Shirley laughed.
Shirley: Oh, oh! That!
Laverne: Yeah! This!
Shirley: Well, I was waiting up for you so I could tell you but you were really late by the way what time is it? Where have you been? I was kinda getting-
Laverne: SHIRL! What’s up with the ring? You’re babbling!
Shirley: Oh the ring right! Well, tonight when I was out with Carmine, he proposed to me!
Laverne’s mouth dropped and she screamed. Shirley got up and they jumped up and down with excitement.
Laverne: Oh Shirl! I’m so happy for ya!
Shirley: Thanks! Me too!
Laverne: I’m glad you finally got some sense into that head too!
Shirley: Yeah, yeah! I know! Well, now everything is gonna be all right and we can all be together!
Laverne: Speaking of all this… where’s Walter?
Shirley: Oh, well he bought his own apartment close to here and he is having Kate for now.
Laverne: So are you and Carmine gonna move into your place?
Shirley: No… there’s too many memories. I mean, I just don’t think I could live in a house with the weight of the first man I married and did all that stuff with, and the presence of the man I’m gonna marry and do all that stuff with… you know?
Laverne: … yeah… anyway… so have you planned it or anything?
Shirley: No…. but I did decide on one thing?
Laverne: What?
Shirley: Will you be my maid of Honor?
Laverne: You know I will!
Shirley: Oh yeah… and will you help plan my wedding with me? I promise it will better than Walter’s wedding. It won’t be rushed and it will actually be held in a decent place.
Laverne: Well of course it will be because I’m taking full charge! We’re gonna have you guys the best wedding you’ve ever seen!
Shirley: Thanks Laverne! You’re really a great friend!
Laverne: Shut up! You know how I hate all that mushy gushy stuff!
Shirley: Right… let’s go to bed.
Part Thirteen:
It was about 4:30 in the afternoon and Carmine was over at Laverne and Shirley’s apartment. Laverne was out shopping for things and getting ideas while Carmine and Shirley stayed at home and planned. They were both sitting on the couch. They had pieces of paper lying around everywhere with information. They were both looking a piece of paper with a layout of the church they were thinking about getting married in.
Shirley: I don’t know. I mean, this seems kinda… big… don’t you think?
Carmine: Big? Well… yeah… I mean, considering how many people we’re inviting, half the church will be empty.
Shirley: Oh Carmine we invited more that half that this church will hold.
Carmine: Well, what about this one?
Shirley: No it’s too small. We already looked at this one remember?
Carmine: This one?
Carmine held up various papers and every word out of Shirley’s mouth was "too big" or "too small." Carmine threw all the papers down and stood up in anger and frustration.
Shirley: What?
Carmine: Nothin’ is right for you is it? It’s either too big or too small or too dark or too this or too that!
Shirley: Carmine… don’t go and get like this! You know that most of those churches were like that and-
Carmine: And what?!
He yelled. Shirley looked at him for a second. She then looked down at her lap.
Shirley: I just wanted this wedding to be perfect. I’ve never had anything in my life be perfect. I thought that this could be the one special thing that would be perfect and I want it to be just right for you too. I just want it to go right. I guess that’s impossible.
Carmine’s face got softer and he realized he had over-reacted.
Carmine: No Shirl… you’ve had things that were perfect in your life before! I mean, what about us? We’re perfect aren’t we? I always thought so! I would go to sleep at night thinking about how no man could ever a more perfect girl and how no couple could ever have a more perfect relationship.
Shirley looked up at him and saw him smile his sweet smile. He sat back down next to her and held her hands.
Carmine: I know you want this to be perfect, but… if two people love each other as much as we do, than isn’t the most important thing that we get married?
Shirley: I guess your right. I’m just so caught up in everything and so caught up in…… just caught up!
Carmine laughed a small laugh. Kissed her head.
Shirley: That’s what makes you perfect Angelface!
They smiled at each other.
Part Fourteen:
It was June 14th and the wedding was in a week, and it seemed that there was nothing else to do. Shirley had bought her dress, Carmine had gotten is suit, all the brides maids had gotten their dresses, the church was ready, the guests had RSVPed and everything else was ready. But to Shirley it seemed like something was missing.
Shirley was at the church with Carmine and Laverne. The preacher was explaining how they would walk down the isle and all that stuff.
Preacher: Now, when whoever is going to walk you down the isle and give you away Shirley, will stand over there…
Then it hit her. Who WAS going to walk her down the isle. Her mother and father had not RSVPed yet. That was what was missing. She tried to think of all the other substitutes. The closest person she knew was Mr. DeFazio. He would have to do, but she didn’t want him to walk her down the isle before he walked his own daughter down the isle. She was now stuck. Maybe she could give herself away she thought.
When the preacher finished his directions, Shirley walked back to sit down and think with her head down. Carmine saw that there was something wrong. She knew he would ask, but she didn’t want to tell him.
Carmine: Hey, what’s wrong Shirl?
Shirley: Um, nothing… I’m just tired that’s all. This has been a lot of work.
Carmine: …oh…
Carmine didn’t believe her and she knew it. She got up.
Shirley: Well, I think we need to go now if there’s nothing else we have to do here.
They all agreed and left.
Part Fifteen:
It was 7:30 A.M. the next morning. Shirley had been up since 3:00 and was sitting on the couch in the dark. Laverne was still sleeping. Shirley was thinking about who was going to walk her down the isle.
Shirley (thinking): I don’t to pick Mr. DeFazio. He needs to walk his own daughter down the isle before me does me.
Shirley: What am I going to do?
Shirley sat there thinking then heard Laverne come down the stairs slowly and turn the lights on. Shirley turned around. Laverne said something through a big yawn.
Shirley: What?
Laverne: I said, why are you up this early and what are you going to do about what?
Shirley: On, I couldn’t sleep.
Laverne walked over to where Shirley was sitting on the couch and sat down next to her.
Laverne: Come on Shirl, you know you can’t hide anything from me!
Shirley: Well, you remember when the preacher was giving us the directions about when I walk down the isle?
Laverne: Oh yeh! It’s gonna be so beauti-ful!
Shirley: Well it would be even more beautiful if I actually had someone to walk me down the isle.
Laverne looked down. She saw Shirley was upset.
Laverne: What about my dad?
Shirley: No Laverne, he needs to walk his own daughter down the isle before me walks me.
Laverne: Aww… Shirl that’s so sweet for ya think about me, but I you-
Shirley: Laverne, I said no, and you can’t change my mind.
Laverne and Shirley thought for a minute. Laverne suddenly got wide eyed.
Laverne: I got it!
Shirley: WHAT?
Laverne: No… you won’t like it.
Shirley: On come on Laverne! Anyone at this point will do besides Mr. DeFazio!
Laverne: Ok… well… how about Lenny and Squiggy?
Shirley got wide eyed too.
Shirley: LENNY AND SQUIGGY! It’s one thing to have one of them walk me down, but both?
Laverne: Ok, ok fine! Bad idea!
Laverne and Shirley thought more. Laverne got another idea.
Laverne: Well what about…
Laverne said something under her breath and covered it up with a cough.
Shirley: Wh-what? I can’t understand you!
Laverne: Um…
She did it again.
Shirley: LAVERNE!
Laverne: WALTER! WHAT IF Walter walked… you down… the isle.
She saw Shirley’s face. She looked really sad. Lavern stood up.
Laverne: Oh great! I’ve really done it now! Now you’re gonna walk around here for the rest of your life because of me! All because I said someone’s name! I’m so stupid!
She began to hit her head with her hand. Shirley grabbed her wrist and stood up.
Shirley: No Laverne! I’m… I just haven’t thought about Walter that much since we got the divorce. But I’m not gonna let one-person ruin this for everyone. I’m gonna be happy and not care about him! So get Lenny and Squiggy! We need to talk!
Laverne smiled and ran out of the apartment. Five minutes later, Lenny and Squiggy burst through the door and kneeled down on either side of the blue chair Shirley was sitting in. Laverne came in behind the crawling slowly.
Squiggy: What may we do for you our bridness?
Shirley stood up.
Shirley: Great! Look, I need both of you to be serious for once in your life please!
They looked at each other and stood up back to back and their arms crossed over their chest and "serious" looks on their faces.
Shirley threw her hands up and plopped down in the chair again.
Shirley: So much for that!
Lenny: Yes you’re royal Seriousness Bride of Ragusa Land?
Shirley: Don’t call me that. Now, see, I need someone to give me away… and well, I thought of you two because you’re two of best friends and then I didn’t know which one to pick. So I decided to ask if both of you would walk me down the isle and give me away.
Lenny: Why do we want to give you away?
Shirley rolled her eyes.
Laverne: No!
Laverne explained it to them.
Squiggy: Yeah… uh… we knew that!
Lenny: Yeah you think you’re living with a bunch of idiots?
Shirley: We never said this was living!
Laverne: Idiots!
Shirley: So will you do this for me?
Lenny and Squiggy got teary eyed and started cry hysterically like they do and hugged Shirley.
Lenny: Oh course!
Squiggy: How sweet!
Shirley hugged them back. She patted their heads, then wiped her hands off on their jackets because of their hair grease.
Part Fifteen:
It was now three days until the wedding. Shirley and Carmine where at her apartment and they were discussing houses. Laverne was at the church talking to preacher and Lenny and Squiggy where with her. Shirley and Carmine where sitting in separate spots. Shirley was on the couch and Carmine was in the blue chair.
Shirley: Well, what do you think?
Carmine: Well, it all depends on how many people are gonna be living in the house.
Shirley: You mean children?
Carmine: Yeah. How many do we want?
She laughed.
Shirley: Carmine, we can’t just decide how many children we want. It just has to happen ya know?
Carmine: Then let’s make it happen right now!
He got up sat next to Shirley. They leaned back on the couch and started to make-out. Shirley started to pull his jacket off when Laverne came busting through the door with Lenny and Squiggy behind her. All three of them saw Shirley and Carmine and stood there. Lenny and Squiggy started to make their noises and Shirley and Carmine sat up quick. Carmine was wiping the lipstick off him and Shirley was fixing her hair.
Laverne: Uh… what’s up you guys?
Lenny and Squiggy laughed and Laverne tried not to.
Shirley: Why are you guys home so soon?
Laverne: We were done early, but if you ant us to leave and come back later… then ya know that would be cool.
Shirley and Carmine looked at each other.
Carmine: No, I was leaving anyway.
Carmine kissed Shirley and left.
Laverne: WILL YOU GUYS LEAVE TOO! YOU’RE BUGGING THE HELL OUTA ME!
Squiggy: FINE! We know where we’re wanted-
Shirley: And it’s not here so get out!
They left.
Laverne: Well, everything was fine except them! UGH! They were like little children!
Children. That word sent chills down Shirley’s spin. She had always wanted children, but now it seemed scary. Especially if they were just like Lenny and Squiggy.
Part sixteen:
It was now the day of the wedding. Shirley was getting ready and Laverne was helping her. They both looked very pretty. Shirley had on a strap-less wedding gown and was a snow-white color. Laverne had on a royal blue gown that had sleeves that went across her shoulders. Laverne was helping Shirley fix her hair. Laverne looked at Shirley the mirror. She turned Shirley around.
Laverne: I’m so happy for ya Shirl!
Shirley: Me to! I finally found my Mr. Right. I’m surprised it took me this long time to figure it out. He was right there all along.
Laverne: Maybe my Mr. Right is standing right in front of me!
Shirley: Don’t worry Laverne! He’ll come along! I promise!
They smiled at each other!
Laverne: I think I’m gonna cry!
Shirley: No not again!
Laverne began to get teary eyed.
Shirley: No, no! You’ll smudge your mascara!
She laughed and then she started to cry. They hugged. Then they heard a knock on the door. Shirley walked over to open it. It was Mrs. Babish and Mr. DeFazio.
Mrs Babish: Oh Shirley! You look wonderful!
Shirley: Aww, thanks! So do you two!
Mr. DeFazio: Well it’s about time you figured out Carmine was right for ya!
Shirley: I know!
They all hugged.
Edna: Oh yeah! There’s someone here to see you!
Shirley: Oh really? Who?
They were all standing in the doorway and Shirley saw him come up behind Mr. and Mrs. DeFazio. Mr. and Mrs. DeFazio moved over so she could see more.
When Shirley saw, she covered her mouth and ran to the person.
Shirley: Oh daddy!
They hugged.
Mr. Feeney: Oh my little cup cake! You look so pretty!
Shirley: I’m so glad you came!
Mr. Feeney: Me too!
Lenny and Squiggy came up behind them.
Lenny: Oh great! Now we can’t walk her anymore.
Mr. Feeney: Shirley, would you mind if your old man gave you away?
Shirley: Oh course not!
They hugged more and then Shirley saw her mother come from behind a corner. She ran to hug her.
Shirley: Oh Momma! I can’t believe you two are here!
Mrs. Feeney: Well we’re so glad we came! We wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Shirley was so over whelmed. Then, she saw ANOTHER person. This time she wasn’t happy, as she was when she saw her parents.
Shirley: Walter.
Walter: Shirl. You look great!
Shirley walked past everyone.
Walter: Look Shirl, I wanted to tell you that I was really happy for you! You are a very lucky women! You got the man you wanted. Also I wanted to ask you if we could still be friends.
Shirley: Oh Walter!
She reached up and hugged him.
Walter: Oh and I know I wasn’t invited but-
Shirley: Go sit down Walter!
She smiled and walked on to sit down.
Part Seventeen:
The wedding was over and everyone was at the reception. People were having a really good time. Then, Laverne, Lenny, Squiggy, Mr. and Mrs. DeFazio and Rhonda all stepped up to the stage. Laverne was at the microphone.
Laverne: Um. Hello?
She tapped the microphone. It made a screechy sound.
Laverne: Sorry! Um, well, hi, I’m Laverne DeFazio. Shirley’s best friend. And these people behind me are some other friends. We’re all like a family and we’ve known each other for a long time. And we’ve known Carmine too. See Carmine and Shirley were an item when they first met and we all knew it. They’ve been together forever! Ever since high school! Well anyway, in honor of them, we wanted dedicate a song to them that they have always loved. Uh, it’s called, "Oh What a Night," and… it had been a quite a night!
A band started to play the song and everyone got up and started to dance. Then the song ended and everyone sat back down. Shirley danced with Walter, her father, Carmine, Lenny, Squiggy, Mr. DeFazio and other relatives and friends and so did Laverne. They all had a good time and then it was time for Shirley and Carmine to leave for their honeymoon.
Part Eighteen:
Laverne was in the room with Shirley while she was getting ready to leave. She had on a different dress and was ready to go.
Laverne: Shirl, I know I’m gonna see ya in a dew days, but I wanted to tell ya that I’m really happy for ya and I’m gonna miss ya while you’re gone. I’m also gonna be really jealous, but enough of that! Just have fun, and I know ya will if ya know what I mean.
She laughed and even Shirley did.
Shirley: Well thanks Laverne! I’m gonna miss you too. You’re a great friend.
They hugged. Then heard a knock on the door.
Shirley: Who is it?
Mr. DeFazio: It’s me! Lemme in hurry!
Shirley walked over to the door and opened it. Mr. DeFazio can flying in.
Shirley: What’s wrong?
Mr. DeFazio: Carmine…fall… hurt… stuck…quick!
Shirley: What? Car-
Laverne: He said Carmine fell and he’s hurt come on!
They ran out behind Mr. DeFazio.
To be continued.
Thanx-
