Summary: Laverne and Lenny visit New
York with their daughter in tow.
10-year-old Alice stood at the headstone of the
woman she was named after, with a handful of fresh violets.
Laverne, still emotional two years after Aleesia's
death, clings to Lenny, her tear-stained face dampening his thin sweatshirt. She leaves a single rose by her
grandmother's name and slowly walks towards the tree several yards away. Lenny
stays behind to say a silent prayer and places fresh daisies beside his wife's
offering. Slowly, he joins her by the tree.
Numb to the sensation of knowing her
great-grandmother has passed away, and not being particularly close to her,
Alice still feels a heavy feeling in her heart knowing that she's not in her
city town house slaving over a pot of tomato sauce that tasted so good it could
have come straight from Italy.
Alice knows that without her great-grandmother's
influence, she might not be here today. Her parents, both forward and honest
with one another, had once denied their love. But with the help of Laverne's
grandmother that fateful summer, they formed a romantic relationship that would
last forever.
She crouches down to run her hands over her
ancestor's name, and gently places the violets between her parents' flowers.
Wiping an invisible tear, and heading towards the
open arms of her beloved parents, Alice mutters a few words that would mean to
world to her namesake: Thank you, Nona. For everything.
