Lenny finished clearing the dinner table as Squiggy looked over his two-year old daughter, covered head to toe with spaghetti sauce.
"You definitely need a bath," he said.
Punky just grinned and produced a piece of spaghetti from a fold in her shirt.
Lenny chuckled as Squiggy pulled Punky's stained shirt over her head. Picking her up from her booster seat, he stood her on the table and stripped her of her shorts and training pants.
"Bath time," Squiggy announced as he set her on the floor while Lenny gathered up Punky's discarded clothes.
"NO!" Punky squealed and took off running as fast as her little legs could carry her.
Squiggy and Lenny paused only a moment to look at each other before running after her.
"Woman!" Squiggy hollered. "Get your naked little butt back here!"
Punky just giggled and ran behind the couch.
They chased after her, each going around an opposite side. Slowly, the approached the naked, spaghetti stained child.
"Now!" Lenny yelled and they both dove for Punky at the same time, knocking heads.
Punky just screamed in delight and made good her escape, running into her room.
Rubbing their foreheads, they stumbled after her and found her hiding on the opposite side of her bed. She just giggled as they approached, anticipating another fun-filled chase.
Lenny dove for her once again, landing on her small bed and sending it crashing to the floor. Punky, eyes wide, managed to elude him once again with a few quick steps backwards.
"Lenny! You fell down!" she exclaimed. "You broka my bed!"
Squiggy seized the moment of distraction, quickly grabbing Punky and picking her up.
"Gotcha!"
"Noooooooo!" Punky wailed giggling, attempting to fall free of her father's embrace. "Lenny broka my bed. No bath! Lenny broka my bed!"
"I'll fix the bed," Lenny said, struggling to his feet. "Just get her in the tub."
Squiggy nodded.
"C'mon, you," he said, wrestling with the squirming toddler as he left the room.
He took Punky into the bathroom and shut the door. Punky was too short to effectively work the knob, so she settled instead for banging on the door and protesting and giggling as her father prepared her bath.
Lenny set to work on fixing Punky's slightly broken bed. As he passed back and forth by the bathroom door while getting tools, he could hear splashing and giggling and singing come from inside. He just chuckled to himself and kept going.
The bed was easily fixed and Lenny managed to have it back to normal (or as normal as a used toddler bed could be) in a few minutes. He finished cleaning up the kitchen, taking Punky's clothes and tossing them in the hamper. He picked out some fresh pajamas and underwear for her and sat down on the couch to have a minute of rest before bath time ended.
It wasn't long before Lenny heard the bathroom door open and the patter of running little feet coming down the hall.
Punky came running into the room with a towel wrapped around her shoulders and her hair dripping down her back.
"Imma fairy princess!" she announced.
Lenny laughed. "Well, Miss Princess, let's get your jammies on."
He pulled her close and started drying off her hair.
"Did you have a nice bath?" he asked.
"We both did," Squiggy said, coming into the room.
Lenny took one look at him and burst out laughing, which caused Punky to start laughing.
Squiggy was soaked. His shirt was so wet it was sticking to him, his jeans were a darker blue from the knees up, and judging from Squiggy's wet hair, it was pretty obvious he'd gotten at least one face full of water.
"There's about an inch of water on the bathroom floor now. We could start our own swamp if we wanted to," he told Lenny. "All we need is an alligator."
"We're not allowed to have pets in the apartment, Squig," Lenny said, gaining control of himself. "You go dry off. I'll take care of the water princess."
"Fairy princess," Punky corrected.
"Right," Lenny said, pulling her pajama top over her head as Squiggy left the room.
Once Punky was dressed and Squiggy was dry, Lenny left them in the living room while he cleaned up the mess in the bathroom. When he was finished, he came back into the living room to find Squiggy sleeping sitting up on the couch, Punky nestled comfortably in his lap, also asleep.
Lenny smiled and gently shook Squiggy to avoid waking up Punky. Squiggy snorted and opened his eyes.
"Bedtime, Squig," he said lightly.
Squiggy yawned and nodded. He stood up, adjusting Punky's limp body in his arms.
"I can't wait until she's old enough to take baths by herself," Squiggy said as he carried her to her room. "It'll be so much easier then."
"Yeah," Lenny agreed. "Until she gets to be a teenager, then she'll be in the bathroom all the time."
Squiggy groaned and Lenny smiled.
