Quiet.
It hadn't been quiet in the apartment since Lenny and Squiggy had moved back to Milwaukee. There was always something going on, someone else there, be it Laverne, Shirley, or, most recently, Punky.
But, tonight, it was quiet. Just Lenny and Laverne sitting on the couch, watching tv, while Punky and Shirley took Squiggy out to a movie.
Lenny had declined the invitation, hoping to get a couple of hours alone. He was surprised when Laverne announced she didn't feel like going and opted to stay with him.
It was as good as being alone. It was a comfortable silence they shared, broken every so often to comment on whatever was on the tv at the time.
During a commercial break Laverne suddenly turned to Lenny.
"Did you date anyone in California after me and Shirl left?" she asked.
"Huh? Oh, yeah," Lenny replied, caught off guard. "It was kinda hard, taking care of Punky and all. And, it got harder after Squiggy got sick, but I went out a little bit."
"Ya never got serious with anyone?" Laverne asked.
Lenny shook his head.
"Nah. Really didn't have the time. And, really, I didn't have the heart to," he told her.
"Oh."
Laverne turned back to the tv, apparently satisfied. But, at the next commercial break, she started questioning him again.
"Didn't you ever get...lonely?"
"Oh, no. I always had Squiggy and Punky," Lenny told her.
Laverne smiled.
"No, Len, I mean...didn't ya ever, ya know, want to be with a woman," she asked shyly. "You are a man after all. You got urges."
"Oh! Well, yeah. It's only natural, right? Sometimes I felt lonely in that way, but..." he shrugged, "one day, I figured it all out and it didn't bug me no more."
Laverne raised an eyebrow.
"Whaddya mean?"
"Well, I figured it like this," Lenny explained, resituating on the couch so he was facing her more. "I'm a simple guy, right? I really only got room in my life for three women. And, I figured I already had 'em all already so I didn't need to worry about it anymore."
"Who are your three women, Len?" Laverne asked with a smile.
"Well, there's the one I couldn't get...that's you." He blushed a bit. "And then there's the one I had to let go...that's Amy." He paused a second. "And, then there's the one who'll never leave me...that's Punky."
Laverne put a hand on Lenny's arm.
"Ya know you can have more than three women if ya want, right?" she asked softly.
Lenny smiled. It was a little sad.
"I know. But, those are the only women I ever wanted."
