Never The Same Again
Part 2
By: Ashley

The words echoed through her head with a roar. Her pillow was wet -- she hadn't even noticed she had been crying. There was one thing she needed to do more than anything else in the world: talk to Shirley. If only should could just pick up the phone, dial a number and say, "Hey Shirl, I need you"... things would be okay. But she couldn't do that. And because she couldn't... things weren't okay.

The only other person she could ever have confided in on something like this was Edna... but like everyone else, Edna had deserted her. She had nobody. And it hurt. It hurt so bad.

The more she thought about it, the sicker to her stomach it made her. Damn California. Damn everything about the place. Her very blood was beginning to boil within her veins. She shot straight up in the bed and threw off the covers. Her anger and depression had become one giant emotion all of a sudden, and she knew that if she didn't try to defeat it, it would swallow her whole. As fast as she could, she changed out of her nightgown into a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. She dusted off the leather suitcase in the bottom of her closet, threw in some clothes, and without a moment's hesitation walked out of the door of her apartment. She locked it, and never looked back.

She had to see Carmine. He was possibly her last hope. She didn't know how in God's name she was going to get there, but she was going to get there. In her pocket, she had a grand total of $217.11. If it took traveling all the way across the country to regain her sanity, she'd just have to DO IT.

She finally reached the train station. "When does the next train leave for New York?" she asked, breathlessly.

A tall, thin, blonde woman responded, "We don't have a train that goes straight to New York. However, we do have one that stops in Chicago, and you can take a train rom Chicago to New York." A pink smile spread across her face. How can she be so happy?

"Fine, fine. Uh, how much is a ticket?" Laverne said, removing the wad of cash from her pockets. Her hands were quivering.

"That would come to a total of eighteen dollars and ninety-nine cents."

Laverne handed her a twenty, the girl gave her the appropriate change, and waited for the 11 o'clock train.

Little did Laverne DeFazio know that the train she was about to get on would change her life indefinitely.
